Killed in action 4th July, 1918, aged thirty-one. Son of William and Ellen Blunden of Burnham Cottage, Dairy Lane, Walberton. Native of Slindon Common. Buried in Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy sur Somme F.29. Herbert DEAN Private G/17811, 12th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment, 39th Division. Killed in action near Becourt on the Somme 3rd September, 1916, aged twenty-six. Son of Mr and Mrs James Dean of 47 Park Lane, Slindon. Born in Slindon and enlisted in Horsham. Buried in Hamel Military Cemetery F701. Charles (William) FROST Private 26791, 2nd Battalion, The Wiltshire Regiment, 19th Division . Died of wounds in base hospital at Rouen on 11th November, 1918, aged forty. Born in King’s Lynn in Norfolk and enlisted in Chichester. Son of Robert and Sarah Frost of Stanhoe, Norfolk. Husband of Edith Frost of Warsash, Southampton. Formerly with the Royal Sussex Regiment. Buried in St Sever Cemetery extension, Rouen F146. Charles (Robert) FRANCIS Able Seaman J/1961/PO, HMS ‘Tipperary’, Royal Navy. Grand Fleet destroyers. Lost with ship during the night action of May 31st/June 1st, 1916 which followed on immediately after the capital ships broke off the action at the Battle of Jutland. Son of Frank and Eliza Annie Francis of Burstowes Croft, Ewhurst, Surrey. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial MR.3. (Howard) Maurice GLOVER Private 75321, 17th Battalion, Royal Fusilliers (City of London Regiment). Killed in action in Flanders, 24th March, 1918. Formerly Territorial Reservist 18624. Buried BAY 3 Arras Memorial. (This man needs quite a lot more work. He is listed on the hand-scripted framed summary of those that serve – on the West wall of the church – as being a regular soldier in the Royal Sussex Regiment, but that is probably not accurate. It is difficult to find out anything much about him.) George HOLDEN Private G/487, 13th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 39th Division. Killed in action during the March Retreat on 21st March, 1918. Aged twenty. Nephew of Elizabeth Burch of ‘Pine View’, Slindon Common, Slindon. Born in Lambeth and enlisted in Chichester. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial MR.27. Walter HUBAND Petty Officer 1st Class 119178 of HMS ‘Viknor’, Royal Navy. HMS ‘Viknor’ was an armed Merchant Cruiser lost with all hands on 13th January, 1915 in heavy weather near Tory Island (off the coast of Donegal) in waters known to have been mined by the Germans. Husband of Mrs Ellen Huband of Slindon. Commemorated on the Porsmouth Naval Memorial MR3. Charles (Frederick) HEATER Stoker 2nd Class K/21440, HMS ‘Bulwark’, Royal Navy. Lost with 738 other sailors when the battleship blew up at Sheerness on 26th November, 1914, aged nineteen. Son of Mrs A White (formerly Heater) of 33 Prospect Cottage, Slindon. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, MR3. John (Jack) MILES Guardsman 34561, 5th (Reserve) Battalion, The Grenadier Guards. Killed in action at Home Depot on 14th July, 1918. Buried in Brompton Cemetery, Chelsea. (Need to get more information on this one if possible.) John PARROTT (This one is difficult. He is listed on the carved Memorial in the church as being a Company Sergeant Major in The Scots Guards. The Scots Guards’ records were all destroyed by fire in one of the blitzes in World War II. There are several John Parrotts listed in the Army records as having been killed in World War I but they are all privates and none came from anywhere near Sussex. Obscure search lines will have to be followed and it might take a bit of time.) May possibly be H Parrott, Co: Quartermaster Sergeant, Grenadier Guards. Died 3rd July, 1916. Buried in La Brique Military Cemetery. 1.x.17. (To be checked.) William (Alfred) ROBERTS Private G/31, 7th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Killed in action near Festubert on 18th December, 1915, aged twenty-two. Son of Charles and Emily Roberts of 58 Slindon Common, Slindon. Born in Slindon and enlisted in Chichester. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial MR.19. Charles STILWELL He is probably Frederick Stillwell, Private 51213, 19th Battalion, The Manchester Regiment. 30th Division. Killed in action at Third Ypres on 31st July, 1917. Born in Graffham, Sussex and enlisted in Chichester. Next of kin, Slindon. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial for those with no known grave, Ypres, Belgium. George (Frederick) WHITE Private 76746, 26th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. 41st Division. Killed in action on 25th October, 1918. Born in Walberton and enlisted in Chichester. Next of kin resident in Slindon. Buried in Heerstert Military Cemetery, Belgium. Stephen WHITTINGTON (Listed at being in the Cycle Corps on the Memorial in the Church.) Lance Corporal 43342, 9th Battalion, The Essex Regiment, 12th Division. Killed in action on 22nd July, 1917, aged forty. Born in Angmering and enlisted in Shepherds Bush, Middlesex. Husband of Mrs M L Whittington of 5, Council Cottages, Slindon. Buried in Monchy British Cemetery, Monchyle Preux. Ph/Feb 2010
