A Short Term Course on

MOLECULAR TECHNIQUES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

RAGACOVAS is a teaching and research institute in the field of Veterinary and

Animal Sciences. The college was established in the year 1994 by the Govt. of Puducherry and affiliated to Pondicherry University. At present, the college offers UG and PG degree programmes in the field of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. The Department of Veterinary

Biochemistry with its well equipped laboratory apart from offering UG and PG courses in

Veterinary Biochemistry, has hosted many biotechnology oriented research projects funded by external organizations. This institute is coming up with the mandate of training young and enthusiastic, scientific and technical personnel employed in the field of biotechnology, in the latest molecular techniques with an aim to bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical knowledge.

Objectives:

 To provide training in molecular biology techniques.

 To impart theoretical knowledge on some of the recently developed molecular biology tools.

 To create a knowledge base of molecular diagnostic tools.

 To impart knowledge in identification of novel protein biomarkers.

 To impart web-based training in basic concepts of bio-informatics.

Target Participants:

This workshop is intended for UGs/PGs in Biological Sciences

(Basic/Medical/Veterinary) who wish to employ molecular techniques in their research or at their place of work.

Number of Participants: 10 (TEN)

Course Duration:

A course of 5 days duration that deals with practical oriented theory and practical demonstration with on bench training, as per the course details.

Course Contents: a) Molecular Techniques:- o DNA and RNA extraction, quality checking and quantification of DNA and

RNA. o PCR- Polymerase Chain Reaction and RT-PCR. o Variations of PCR: PCR-RFLP, PCR-SSCP, AS-PCR, Nested PCR, Multiplex

PCR. o LAMP Technique o Agarose Gel Electrophoresis b) Bioinformatics:- o Locating the gene sequence of interest and its retrieval o Sequence analysis – BLAST, ClustalW, RE Map o Designing of primer for PCR c) Special lectures on:- o Molecular diagnostic tools o Proteomics – identification of protein markers
