Topic: Adding 2 digit numbers Grade 2 Ashley Ennis TEKS: Math (2.111.14.2.3.B) model addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers with objects, pictures, words, and numbers. TLW: use models to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. Quality Questions: Why do we draw out the number as tens and ones? Why do we need to regroup? Core: Have a 2 digit off decade number + a 2 digit off decade number written on the Qomo. Ask a student volunteer to show how they would solve that problem. Student will be show their thinking by writing on the Qomo. Ask if another student has a different way they solved it. Student will show their thinking on the Qomo. IP: Day 3 (Word Problems+Regroup Tens and Ones, Comparing Numbers) Small group: Counting on and off the decade using popsicle sticks and/or unifix cubes, solving 2 digit plus 2 digit addition and subtraction problems (Off decade + Off decade). Place a number under the cover, then place one bundle (uncovered)and asked how many? Progress to 1,2 and/or 3 bundles, etc. Record students' thinking. Also remove bundles for subtraction tasks and missing subtrahend tasks. OR Pose two-digit addition problems. Encourage students to use fact strategies to solve and teacher records thinking on an ENL or other strategies. Ex. 53+23 Students may use a double strategy to solve. 53+3 is 56 + 2- is 76. OR 50+20 is 70, 3+3 is 6 so 76. Example: 62+28 Students may use a make 10/think 10 strategy to solve. 62 and 8 is 70 plus 20 is 90 OR 60+20 is 80 and 2 and 8 is 10 so 80+10 is 90. Students may solve it another way. Teacher discuss and record all solution on an anchor chart. **Number range is dependent upon level of small group. Assessment: Student work and student participation Students using the Qomo tablet to show her thinking in solving the problem 25 + 99=.
