Background
The Freud Museum London is the final home of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and his
daughter Anna, a pioneer of child psychoanalysis. The centerpiece of the Museum is Freud’s
extraordinary study, containing his iconic psychoanalytic couch, countless books and antiquities. The
Museum opened in 1986, since when it has developed an international reputation for its contemporary
art exhibitions, research and conferences.
In recent years the Museum has begun a programme of fundraising and development which has
included improvements to collections management, interpretation, visitor services, marketing and
audience development. Last year, the museum received over 20,000 visitors, the majority of whom
come from central Europe, North and South America and are either working in or studying psychology.
We are now working to bring the Museum to wider audiences and we intend for the intern to assist us
in achieving this key aim. We recently began work on an exciting project with the National Portrait
Gallery which involves the creation of a major exhibition opening on 24 November, as well as an
associated education and events programme and the production of new resources.
The Role
This role will give you an excellent insight into the day to day running of small but ambitious
independent museum with a staff of 10 plus several volunteers. You will have the opportunity to get
involved with a variety of work, including the project with the National Portrait Gallery which coincides
with the duration of the internship. Interns are welcome to attend all museum events and conferences.
Curatorial & Exhibitions
 Carry out regular visual and environmental checks throughout display and storage areas
 Assist with documentation backlog
 Support National Portrait Gallery project as required
 Assist Photo Library Manager with online catalogue and processing image orders
 Edit audio content for audioguide and website
Education & Events
 Support delivery of education sessions and accompanying resources
 Collate education bookings data
 Support occasional evening/weekend events
 Take bookings
Marketing & Communications
 Assist with maintenance of Freud Museum website, eg event and exhibition information
 Produce posters for events, distribute posters, museum leaflets etc
 Maintain Museum’s presence on Facebook and Twitter, and partner websites, eg London Shh…
Finance & Administration
 Support Financial Manager with processing of shop takings, cheques and invoices
 Respond to general enquiries via phone and email
 Order stationary as required
We are looking for
 MA in Museum Studies or equivalent
 Knowledge of collections care and management
 An interest in Freud and psychoanalysis
 Excellent administration and organizational skills
 Ability to manage and prioritize workload and meet deadlines
 Careful and methodical approach, attention to detail
 Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a small team and independently
 Excellent written and spoken communications skills
 Computer literacy (MS Office, Outlook, Photoshop, Audacity, social networking)
 Flexibility, patience and a positive outlook
Supervision
Due to the nature of this post, you will be reporting to different members of staff for each area of work,
however, overall supervision of the internship will be given by the Development Officer.
Duration and Hours
This internship lasts for 3 months, starting on 13 September. You will attend the Museum four days a
week (Mon/Tue/Thur/Fri). Typically interns work from 10.00 – 17.00, however there is some flexibility
and this can be negotiated. Occasionally, you may be asked to support evening/weekend events.
As this is a paid internship, we are unable to cover your travel expenses to/from the Museum. However,
if you undertake any additional travel on Museum business, any costs arising will be reimbursed.
The Freud Museum London is unable to make an offer of further employment at the end of the
internship; however, you will have a review in which we will assess what you have learned and how you
can apply your experience to your future career. You will also be
Induction and Training
The successful candidate will be given a full induction into the work of the Museum. You will also have
the opportunity to attend relevant training during the internship. Costs of training will be covered by
the Museum.
