We will work with you to help you make an informed decision about the form of treatment to restore your oral health, and discuss the ways to care for your teeth. Our office offers emergency service when you need it. For non-emergencies, we provide flexible hours by appointment. To ensure timely service, we request 48-hour notice if you cannot keep your appointment. Bleeding The gauze we placed over your extraction site(s) should stay for thirty minutes or until you get home whichever is longer. There may be some bleeding or oozing after you remove the gauze pack. If necessary, place clean gauze thick enough to hold pressure directly on the extraction site. Maintain the pressure for 30 minutes. Repeat if needed. Do not suck on the extraction site. Do not drink through a straw. Do not rinse or smoke until tomorrow; limit strenuous activity for 24 hours. Swelling and Pain You may have some pain and notice some swelling. Apply ice to the face fifteen minutes on and fifteen minutes off for three hours today. Medications Take two acetaminophen tablets or two ibuprofen tablets every four hours for the rest of today. Take the first dose while you are still numb. Diet After the extraction, drink liquids and eat soft foods. Do not chew on the extraction site. Rinsing Starting tomorrow, rinse with warm salt water. It is especially important to rinse after meals to keep the socket clean and clear of food particles. Avoid smoking! The most frequent dental complication from extractions is a “dry socket.” This rarely occurs in a non-smoker. The medication we put in the socket and rinsing as directed should help avoid this. The medication may come out or may dissolve in place over time. You may get splinters of bone coming from the extraction site or small particles of the medicine coming out. That is normal.
