Bleeding The gauze we placed over your extraction site(s) should stay for thirty minutes or until you get home whichever is longer. There may be some bleeding or oozing after you remove the gauze pack. If necessary, place clean gauze thick enough to hold pressure directly on the extraction site. Maintain the pressure for 30 minutes. Repeat if needed. Do not suck on the extraction site. Do not drink through a straw. Do not rinse or smoke until tomorrow; limit strenuous activity for 24 hours. Swelling and Pain You may have some pain and notice some swelling. Apply ice to the face fifteen minutes on and fifteen minutes off for three hours today. Medications Take two acetaminophen tablets or two ibuprofen tablets every four hours for the rest of today. Take the first dose while you are still numb. Diet After the extraction, drink liquids and eat soft foods. Do not chew on the extraction site. Rinsing Starting tomorrow, rinse chlorhexidine after breakfast and at bedtime. Rinse with warm salt water after lunch and dinner. It is especially important to rinse after meals to keep the socket clean and clear of food particles. Avoid smoking!
