I also attended BMJ seminars and international meetings of the Vancouver group of Medical Editors. One of my 'Minerva' submissions holds the record for the most provocative of ensuing correspondence. Whilst a Surgical House Officer I wrote an audit project which received regional approval and funding Whilst a Psychiatric Senior House Officer I conducted an audit of the use of Section 117 of the Mental Health Act (1983) in the Home Counties I was the ethics columnist for the journal 'Medical Review' and also reviewed books pseudonomously for this and other journals. I have undertaken some freelance editorial work for Channel 4 Television. I advised the scriptwriters of 'Coronation Street' with regard to the progress of Hayley, a transsexual character. A 'Personal View' I wrote for the British Medical Journal received widespread press attention, being described among other things as 'thrillingly poetical'. It is now being made into a TV drama. Presentations I lectured on the drug treatment of transsexuals in November 1999 at the Royal College of Physicians Sexual Disorders Conference. I lectured on the practical management of a Gender Identity Clinic at Staffordshire University in December 1999. I lectured on Transsexualism for a mid 1999 specialist Speech and Language Therapy conference dealing with the treatment of transsexual clients. I have advised numerous state-owned and private corporate employers (Royal Mail, British Airports Authority etc.) about the approaches they might adopt when faced with an employee who wishes to change their gender role in the workplace. I have advised the homelessness charity ‘Centrepoint Soho’ on disorders of gender identity. I presented papers concerning bone metabolism in oestrogen treated male to female transsexuals and the psychological consequences of phalloplasty in female to male transsexuals at the second European Network of Professionals on Transsexualism conference and the 1994 Gender Trust conference. I presented a paper concerning the long-term follow up of female to male transsexuals at the 14th International symposium of operative andrology. I presented a paper concerning the long-term follow-up of female to male transsexuals undergoing phalloplasty at the 1997 Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association Conference in Vancouver, Canada. I presented a case of sexual deviance successfully controlled with sertraline at the 1994 British Society of Social and Clinical Psychiatrists Annual General Meeting in the Channel Island of Guernsey. I have lectured General Practitioners and Community Psychiatric Nurses on the subject of treatment resistant depression in the elderly at Imperial College London. I lecture biannually at New Scotland Yard on the subject of the England and Wales Mental Health Act for the South East and London study course for the Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence. I lecture twice yearly at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square on the role of liaison psychiatry in vestibular disorders. I lecture yearly at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital on the role of liaison psychiatry in a multidisciplinary approach to dizziness. I lecture yearly at Southampton University medical school on the subject of Human Rights. In addition I have spoken on Doctors’ roles in Human Rights issues to medical students in Edinburgh, Birmingham, University College London, and at the 1997 BMA medical student conference in Cardiff. I have spoken on the same topic to such diverse non-medical groups as the students at a Catholic Seminary, at Birmingham University, a Quaker boarding school, and also to a wide variety of Amnesty International local groups. I spoke to the Royal Free Hospital ethics group concerning mental illness in health care workers in May 1995. I was the United Kingdom delegate to the Second International Conference of Amnesty International Medical Networks in May 1995.
