1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Students will demonstrate competence in
writing, reading, and speaking.
 Present ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral
communications
 Master commonly employed Spanish grammatical structures and
syntax
 Demonstrate the ability to speak and write effectively on subject
matter contained in the curriculum.
The student will succeed at the college level upon completion of required
courses for the B. A. degree. During his/her collegiate career, the student will
successfully advance from lower level courses to upper level courses.
Direct Measure(s)
All majors must earn a grade of “C” or better in all lower and upper
level Spanish courses, for example, SPN 3420 Spanish Grammar
& Syntax, SPW 4604 Cervantes, SPN 1120-2221 Elementary
Spanish I and II, and Intermediate Spanish I and II
Indirect Measure(s)
Exit interview. The exit interviews will confirm that 80 % of the
students demonstrate the ability to speak effectively on subject
matter, as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of
Foreign Languages. (e.g., answer questions thoroughly, ease of
expression and high level of fluency)
Direct Measure(s)
Exams, quizzes and compositions will be based on
appropriate rubrics.
Indirect Measure(s) Exit interview.
2. CRITICAL THINKING: Apply critical thinking to learning and real world
situations.

Develop their critical thinking abilities making connection between
language, literature, and culture through provocative readings about
culture, political and social situations as reflected in various written
works.
 Critically interpret literary works by Hispanic writers of various
genres, periods, traditions, and ethnic backgrounds.
The student will be competent in literary analysis.

All majors must earn a grade of “C” or better in all lower and
upper level Spanish courses, for example, SPN 3420 Spanish
Grammar & Syntax, SPW 4604 Cervantes, SPN 1120-2221
Elementary Spanish I and II, and Intermediate Spanish I and II

will be based on appropriate rubrics.
Indirect Measure(s) Exit interview.
3. CULTURAL DIVERSITY:



Students will demonstrate an appreciation for differences among
people
Students will demonstrate the ability to study different socio-cultural
norms, will be able to react with awareness of such differences, and
will be able to compare them to their own culture.
Students will demonstrate an awareness of the diversity of needs,
values, behavioral norms, and social patterns that characterize
different cultures.
Indirect Measure(s)
Exit interview. The interview will confirm that 80% of the students
will demonstrate the ability of interpretation, critical thinking as well
as analytical skills by using correct, lucid, and cogent rhetorical
strategies in lingua. (e.g., adequate semantic, free of error in
mechanics, usage, grammar and spelling)

level Spanish courses, for example, SPN 3420 Spanish Grammar
& Syntax, SPW 4604 Cervantes, SPN 1120-2221 Elementary
Spanish I and II, and Intermediate Spanish I and II

Exit interview. The interview will confirm that 80% of the students
demonstrate knowledge, understanding and appreciation for
differences among people as well are informed about other culture
than they were before. (e.g., students may be involved in study
abroad and/or foreign exchange program for a minimum of one
summer or semester).

Journals, portfolios and research papers will be graded
based on appropriate rubrics.
Indirect Measure(s) Exit interview.
ETHICAL VALUES: demonstrate personal responsibility and integrity in
academic and personal situations.
 Students will be able to increase their awareness and
understanding of Hispanic culture
 Students will focus on personal growth and learning.

successfully complete upper level courses.

5. LIFE-LONG LEARNING: demonstrate an appreciation for further education
and self-improvement.
 The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of Hispanic
culture which will help them to understand world issues in the area
of art, technology, science, politics, history, and values. This will
aid the student in setting goals and making choices in his/her
personal life.

the ability to learn the concepts involved in Spanish language and
Hispanic culture team projects (team functions, team roles,
common goals, utilizing strengths of team members) and each
student must participate in 1 such experience for the duration of 4
weeks or more (internships/study abroad, departmental team
projects, or community projects, such as mentor or tutorial).

7. TECHNOLOGY LITERACY: Students will be able to apply technology
to achieve educational success, advance research and understand
global issues. Students will be able to
 use technology to enhance communication and practice with
the language.

literature and civilization classes.
 use word processing for writing, editing assignments, and
create multimedia presentations;

conducting research, and solving problems. Students will also
participate in activities that encourage lifelong learning and will
promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology
resources. Students will be able to apply basic troubleshooting
strategies as needed.
