Backer S. Bauer, Calendar Editor Sprott School of Business Program Changes 1. Extend a modified version of the Fast-Track for Business Students arrangement to the MBA (research project option) 2. Add a Fast-track MBA for Honours Degrees with a Minor In Business 1. Extend a modified version of the Fast-Track for Business Students arrangement to the MBA (research project option) Old Version: Fast Track M.B.A. Applicants who have: an honours business degree (equivalent to a B.Com. from Carleton University) or the expectation of completing the course requirements for such a degree by May of the year in which they plan to join the M.B.A. program; a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 10.0 in their business courses and 9.0 GPA or better overall in their business degree program; successfully completed courses in research methods (equivalent to BUSI 5902, Business Research Methods) and multivariate statistics (equivalent to BUSI 5903, Multivariate Statistics for Business Research) may apply for admission into the M.B.A program (Research Thesis option); without having to write an otherwise-required GMAT test, and may be admitted with an advanced standing of 1.0 credit New Version: Fast Track M.B.A. for Business Students Research Thesis Program Applicants may apply for admission into the MBA program and may be admitted with an advanced standing of 1.0 credit. Applicants from Carleton University may apply without having to write an otherwise required GMAT test. This applies to applicants who have: an honours business degree (equivalent to a B.Com. from Carleton University) or the expectation of completing the course requirements for such a degree by May of the year in which they plan to join the M.B.A. program; a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 10.0 in their business courses and 9.0 GPA or better overall in their business degree program; successfully completed courses in research methods (equivalent to BUSI 5902, Business Research Methods) and multivariate statistics (equivalent to BUSI 5903, Multivariate Statistics for Business Research); Research Project Program Applicants may apply for admission into the MBA program and may be admitted with an advanced standing of 1.0 credit. Applicants from Carleton University may apply without having to write an otherwise required GMAT test. This applies to applicants who have: an honours business degree (equivalent to a B.Com. from Carleton University) or the expectation of completing the course requirements for such a degree by May of the year in which they plan to join the M.B.A. program; a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 10.0 in their business courses and 9.0 GPA or better overall in their business degree program; successfully completed a course in research methods (equivalent to BUSI 5902, Business Research Methods) or multivariate statistics (equivalent to BUSI 5903, Multivariate Statistics for Business Research) and an integrative course (equivalent to BUSI 5805 Innovation Management; or BUSI 5806 Managing Transformational Change; or BUSI 5807 Digital Business; or BUSI 5808 Enterprise Development). Rationale: We expect that the extended fast-track arrangement will be popular and will increase the number of well-qualified students that we can recruit into the MBA. The current arrangement works well for those students interested in a research career, but is not as attractive to the majority. The combination of one compulsory methods course and one compulsory integrative course will significantly speed up the progress of students who select the Project Option. 2. Add a Fast-track MBA for Honours Degree with a Minor In Business Old Version: None New Version: Fast-track MBA for Honours Degrees with a Minor In Business Research Thesis Program Applicants may apply for admission into the MBA program and may be admitted with an advanced standing of 1.0 credit. Applicants from Carleton University may apply without having to write an otherwise required GMAT test. This applies to applicants who have: completed a four-year degree (equivalent to an Honours bachelor’s degree from Carleton) or who expect to complete the course requirements for such a degree by May of the year in which they plan to join the MBA program; successfully completed the Minor in Business with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 10.0 in their business courses and 9.0 or better overall in their degree program; successfully completed an undergraduate statistical methods course (equivalent to STATS 2606, Business Statistics I, and STATS 2607, Business Statistics II); successfully completed an undergraduate operations management course (equivalent to BUSI 2300, Introduction to Management Science); successfully completed a course in research methods (equivalent to BUSI 5902, Business Research Methods) and multivariate statistics (equivalent to BUSI 5903, Multivariate Statistics for Business Research). Research Project Program Applicants may apply for admission into the MBA program and may be admitted with an advanced standing of 1.0 credit. Applicants from Carleton University may apply without having to write an otherwise required GMAT test. This applies to applicants who have: completed a four-year degree (equivalent to an Honours bachelor’s degree from Carleton) or who expect to complete the course requirements for such a degree by May of the year in which they plan to join the MBA program; successfully completed the Minor in Business with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 10.0 in their business courses and 9.0 or better overall in their degree program; successfully completed an undergraduate statistical methods course (equivalent to STATS 2606, Business Statistics I, and STATS 2607, Business Statistics II); successfully completed an undergraduate operations management course (equivalent to BUSI 2300, Introduction to Management Science); successfully completed a course in research methods (equivalent to BUSI 5902, Business Research Methods) or multivariate statistics (equivalent to BUSI 5903, Multivariate Statistics for Business Research) and an integrative course (equivalent to BUSI 5805 Innovation Management; or BUSI 5806 Managing Transformational Change; or BUSI5807 Digital Business; or BUSI 5808 Enterprise Development). Rationale: The Minor in Business requirements map well to the requirements for the MBA Program. The fast-track MBA serves to offer an additional academic option for students to build on their choice to do a Minor in Business. Additionally the role of many positions in non-business specific domains has expanded to include managerial functions. For example many engineers and scientists, especially those who are successful, become full-time managers, moving from technical concerns to larger organizational issues. This change in the expectations of practicing engineers and scientists has led to a growing demand for management training, particularly the MBA degree. By combing a Minor in Business with their honours degree, the students learn both about the basic business functions and their chosen discipline. This combination gives the students the background they need to complete an advanced MBA degree. The program is designed so that a student may be able to complete in five years an Honours bachelor’s degree and an MBA degree.
