THEA 15 –Special Topics: Textiles: Taught Winter 2012
This course introduces varied techniques in textile manipulation to create scenic and costume design
properties including drapery, upholstery, masks, bags, and millinery. In addition to basic sewing, students will
also learn surface design methods such as knitting, screen-printing, painting/dyeing, and distressing.
THEA 17 –Costume Construction: Taught Winter 2011
This course is a study of the proper skills and techniques necessary for quality costume construction.
Students develop both hand and machine sewing techniques; flat patterning from individual measurements,
proper fabric selection, draping, pattern manipulation, fitting, alteration(s), and dyeing.
THEA 50 –Fundamentals of Theater Production: Taught Spring 2012, Winter 2012, Fall 2011, Spring 2011, Winter 2011,

This laboratory course is a basic introduction to the production of theater costumes and the operations of the
costume shop. This course is designed for the student’s direct involvement in the mounting of current

utilized by students include corrective, painted old-age, putty/wax, three dimensional latex, wound and blood
effects.

This course is a study of the proper skills and techniques necessary for quality costume construction.
Students develop both hand and machine sewing techniques; flat patterning from individual measurements
for both women’s wear and men’s wear.

This course is an in depth study of the clothing styles &/or silhouettes of western civilization from 3500 BC
to the present.

This is an introductory course which aims to increase the student’s critical and aesthetic sensitivity to the art
of theatre. This is a basic theatre appreciation course designed for students to fill a University fine arts
requirement.

effects are used to create realistic theatrical characters.

This course is a study of costume design for the theatrical stage. Students develop an understanding of and
skills in the areas of script analysis, character conceptualization, research, as well as, thumbnail and rough
sketches and a variety of rendering techniques to visually communicate their ideas to directors, fellow
designers, actors and the costume shop staff.

skills in the areas of script analysis, character conceptualization, research, as well as, thumbnail and rough

DRAMA 189 – Project in Production: Taught Fall 2007
This course is a supervised project for a specific department production. The student was the hair & makeup designer for two productions during the semester – The Polish Joke and La Celestina.
DRAMA 190 – Supervised Independent Study: Taught Fall 2007
This course is a supervised independent project for a specific costume construction assignment for a
department production. The student built an entire costume from the designer’s rendering for a character in
the play La Celestina.

THE 201 – Workshop in Theatre Production I: Taught Spring 2007, Fall 2006
This laboratory course is a basic introduction to the production of theatre costumes. This course is designed

This course is a study of the skills and techniques utilized in creating sketches and renderings for the theatre.
Student’s drawing and rendering abilities develop and improved through hand-on projects which include:
still-lives, perspective, architectural structures, theatrical scenery, and human figures.

This course is a study of the proper skills and techniques necessary for quality costume construction.

A basic introduction to the crafts of theatre: costumes, scenery and lighting. This course examines the
organization of theatre from the production viewpoint. Utilizing a combination of lecture and hands-on
exercises, students are introduced to and become knowledgeable of the fundamental tools, materials,
procedures and techniques used in technical theatre.
THR 241 – Costume Design: Taught Spring 2004
Required of all design and technology sequence majors, this course is a study of costume design and
construction for the theatrical stage. Students develop an understanding of script analysis, character
conceptualization, research, a variety of rendering techniques, as well as, additional skills in the area of
costume construction.

This course is a basic introduction to dramatic literature from ancient Greece to the twentieth-century. This
course explores the nature of drama, its types, techniques, and conventions. For analysis purposes, particular
attention is given to historical context and cultural boundaries. This course focuses on the literary aspects of
drama, such as plot, character, and theme rather than production elements.
THTR 110 – Introduction to Theatre: Taught Fall 2002
This course, which serves as a basic introduction to theatre, is required of all majors. The fullness and variety
of the art of theatre is explored through theories, practices, dramatic structure, acting, directing, design,
practical stagecraft and some theatre history. Focus is placed on stage production as it changed and
developed over a twenty-five hundred year period.
THTR 211 – Theatre History I: Taught Fall 2002
Required of all majors, this course is a chronological study of western theatre from ancient Greek drama to
seventeenth-century British drama. An emphasis is placed on the social, cultural, and theatrical contexts in
which each playwright lived and wrote. Students develop an understanding of theatre as an art shaped
through the centuries by cultural dialectics of acceptance and rejection, artistic vision, and political power.
THTR 212 – Theatre History II: Taught Spring 2003
This course, which is a continuation of Theatre History I, is required of all majors. A chronological study of
western theatre from seventeenth-century French and Spanish, through Restoration and eighteenth-century
British drama, up to nineteenth-century German, Scandinavian, and Russian drama. Through a selection of
plays from representative playwrights, a greater understanding of the social, cultural and theatrical contexts in
which each playwright lived and wrote will be achieved.
THTR 370 – Special Topics: Costume Construction: Taught Spring 2002
A special topic in technical theatre, this course introduces students to both beginning and intermediate skills,
crafts, materials, techniques, and tools basic to the execution of costume production. Students focus on
technical projects in order to give them a greater understanding and appreciation for the work of costume
technicians.
