JOB SPECIFICATION
1. PREAMBLE
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is part of the SA Health new models of care for Major Hospitals
with the aim of meeting the 4 hour target in the Emergency Department and streamlining the flow
of patients into the hospital. The AMU consists of 30 beds located adjacent to the ED which
optimises the physical relationship between the AMU and ED. The AMU is a dedicated unit where
patients with partially sorted acute and undifferentiated medical illnesses undergo rapid and
rigorous assessment and treatment by competent senior medical staff as part of a multidisciplinary team 24hrs a day 7 days a week. The AMU team provides initial diagnostic workup
and treatment for patients with acute and undifferentiated medical conditions and or those who
require rapid and multidisciplinary assessment. The AMU will be for the 4 to 48 hour time phase
of the patient journey and will sort, discharge and allocate patients to units across SAHS.
2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties
The AMU Physiotherapist will be operating as part of a multidisciplinary team which includes
Medical, Nursing and other Allied Health staff and Administrative Support Staff. The AMU
Physiotherapist will be responsible for delivering high quality physiotherapy assessment and
intervention to those patients admitted to the AMU.
The incumbent will also be required to work with the Allied Health Division for the high quality
operational management of the service.

Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance

5.1 High Quality Patient Care
5.1.1 Service provision:
The incumbent, as a member of the AMU team, is responsible for the efficient and effective
delivery of high quality patient care services, through the contribution and leadership as a multidisciplinary team member, in;

the provision of early, rapid response assessment, care planning, intervention and review
as a senior AH practitioner

the supervision and continuous development of PSO1 staff and students allocated to the
Unit (if relevant)

Supervision of paramedical aide staff as required

the development of services and operational planning

active development, implementation and publication of new techniques, methods or
research results relevant to the unit patients

active participation of patients and their families/ carers in their assessment and care
planning including cognitive, physical, functional and psycho- social needs to enable them
to achieve the optimal level of
independence and timely discharge from the unit
5.1.2 Consultation and Liaison
The incumbent consults with the health team, the patient and carers, FMC and community
service representatives to:

Continually refine and evaluate the AAU protocols, assessment formats, services and
processes to enable coordinated discharge planning

Provide information regarding assessment and ongoing care on discharge from AAU

provide specialist advice related to the professional discipline and AH multi-disciplinary
services
building capacity of the Unit to achieve optimal use of community service supports for
patients and families and increase community service knowledge, access skills and
partnerships to achieve the AAU unit outcomes
Improving FMC/ Community transition pathways and additional options for services.
5.1.3 Service management, database management and service evaluation
The incumbent, as a member of the health care team, is responsible for contribution and
leadership to the;
 collection and analysis of data to provide information on patient progress or services to
make recommendations to the AAU for service improvements
 participation in team quality activities, research and evaluation
 performance measurement reports.
5.1.4 Professional and multidisciplinary skills
The incumbent, as a member of the health care team, is responsible for :
 orientation to best practice multi-disciplinary management of clients referred to AAU
 maintaining own high levels of professional knowledge and skills
 undertaking a performance review annually with the discipline head

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (those characteristics considered absolutely necessary)
Educational/Vocational Qualifications


Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) or equivalent.
Eligible for Registration as a physiotherapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation
Agency.
