MYP Level 1
Course Syllabus
Madame Clement
West and East Middle Schools
I. Course Description
6th grade Language B (French) is an integral part of the Middle Years Program
curriculum. It is one of the 8 interrelated MYP subjects. It gives students an appreciation
of different cultures in francophone countries around the world. It also gives students the
ability to start communicating on a basic level in French.
- 6th grade Language B French is for all 6th grade students, including those with
disabilities and learning challenges.
- 6th grade Language B French meets daily for 10 weeks.
- 6th grade Language B students are IB learners and will be challenged to be
inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded,
caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.
- 6th grade Language B French content is presented in a holistic way, linking it to
other subjects and real world issues.
- 6th grade Language B French students develop international-mindedness. They
learn about their own and others’ social, national and ethnic cultures.
Course outline:
Students will learn reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the following
topics – the alphabet, personal identification, greetings, farewells, feelings, age,
numbers 0-50, food, description, family and animals.
II. Aims and Objectives
6th grade Language B French learners begin their class lessons with open-ended, thought
provoking questions known as essential and/or guided questions. The curriculum goals
are also linked to the New York State Learning Standards for LOTE (Languages Other
Than English) which are:
- The ability to use language other than English for communication. These
skills are used for the purposes of socializing, providing and acquiring
information, expressing personal feelings and opinions and getting others to adopt
a course of action.
- The development of cross-cultural skills and understanding. Effective
communication involves meanings that go beyond words and require an
understanding of perceptions, gestures, folklore, family and community dynamics.
III. Areas of Interaction
6th grade Language B French is formatted to link French class to the MYP Areas of
Interaction: Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Human Ingenuity,
Environments and Health and Social Education.
IV. Texts and resources
Students are given a teacher-created workbook, which was created from multiple sources.
Students will also be using technology and the library.
V. Methodology
Madame Clement will use different teaching techniques to accommodate students of all
different multiple intelligences. Activities will revolve around listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills in French.
VI. Methods of Assessment and Grading
Students will have 2 types of methods of assessment: 1. Traditional grading criteria
(percentage grades out of 100%) and also 2. MYP forms of assessment.
Students will be evaluated by quizzes, daily observations, role play, group work, class
activities, projects, discussions and interviews. At the end of this 6th grade course, they
will have an all-conclusive speaking and writing test.
You might be asking, “What is an MYP assessment?”. The students are graded on an
achievement level scale from 1 to 8. 8 is the highest grade that a student can achieve. For
example, if the student was asked to do a speaking task, the teacher would ask
him/herself: To what extent can the student…..?
-request and/or provide information appropriate to the task
-understand and respond to questions and statements
-present their ideas, giving details when appropriate
-demonstrate the ability to maintain a coherent and flowing conversation
The teacher will then use a grading rubric provided by the MYP Committee to give the
student the appropriate grade between 1 and 8.
