1.0 Project Analysis
1.1 Document Purpose
The IER 517 ATB2 printer selected for North America/European
installation is a Desktop unit with a secure stock bin. This printer utilizes
thermal transfer printing technology and is equipped with one (1) secured
paper input path and one external input path.
This document provides reference material for basic operation of the IER
517 ATB2 printer. This document is intended for field personnel,
maintenance representatives and other personnel involved with the
installation, maintenance and support of the IER 517 printer globally.
Also, referecnce IER 517 User Guide document (NO7702A).
1.2 Project Overview
The IER 517 ATB2 printer has been certified for Global use as a RS-232C Serial interface ATB2 printer only. The printer was tested for use of the
two (2) paper input paths utilizing standard ATB2 stock and ATB2 w/SCN.

2.0 Operation
2.1 Loading Stock
The following Five (5) STEPS describe the procedure for loading stock
into the IER 517 ATB2 printer. The printer will accept, and only operate
with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. The printer comes standard with
two (2) stock feeds. Also, see figure 1.0 on following page.

Power the printer ON. The printer will display the following message:
Load Stock
In BIN 1 2
2. Correctly position the stock in the secure bin of the printer (2). Insert
the stock, staple stub end first, print side up (1). When the stock is
inserted into the feeder slot, the stock will be automatically pulled into
the printer. Close the secure bin (6). Load the stock into the exterior,
top feeder (3). Again, when the stock is inserted into the feeder slot,
the stock will be automatically pulled into the printer. Make sure that
the perforation between the first two (2) coupons is in tact. If the
perforation is not in tact, remove the leading coupon to prevent the
possibility for jams. Place the stock behind the secured bin (5).
3. Once stock is loaded, the printer will display the following message:

4. If the printer is in an offline state the printer will display the following

5. To place the printer on line press the On line button on the printer.

2.2 Printing A Configuration (Font Test, Protocol, etc.) Coupon
The following Six (6) STEPS describe the procedure for printing a
statistics (configuration) coupon. This coupon will be used to validate that
the printer is configured correctly or show where changes need to be
made. Refer to section 4.6 Configuration Coupon for an example
configuration coupon.
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On Line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock. The printer’s display will read:

2. Press the On line button once to take the printer off-line. The printer’s

3. Press the Left Arrow button once. The printer’s display will read:
Configuration
Test Coupon
The configurations are currently on multiple coupons. Each
configuration can be reached by pressing the Left Arrow button.
Below is a list of what data can be found on each coupon. For an
example please refer to section 4.6 – 4.10.
Left Arrow once - Configuration Test Coupon: Margins, cutter, platen,
sensors, stock type, magnetic settings.
Left Arrow twice - Font Test Coupon: Available fonts in printer.
Left Arrow three times - Protocol Test Coupon: Printer settings (baud,
data bits, parity, stop bits
Left Arrow 4 times - Listing Ramdisk: List the PECTABs currently in the
printer.
Left Arrow 7 times - Test Coupon: Produces a test ticket. To print the
test coupon once in the menu you must press enter, press the Right
Arrow and when the printer reads Print Txt1?, press the Enter button.
4. Press the Clear button to exit out of each of the menus, one at a time.
5. Press the On line button to place the printer back on line
6. Ensure that the printer is configured properly. If configuration is
required, refer to section 2.3 Configuring The Printer for instructions
and 4.5 Configuration Menu Tree for printer menus.

2.3 Configuring The Printer
The following Seven (7) STEPS describe the procedure for configuring
the IER 517 ATB2 printer.
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock. The printer’s display will read:

2.4 Adjusting The Stock’s Contrast
The following Thirteen (13) STEPS describe the procedure for adjusting
the stock’s contrast:
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock .. The printer’s display will read:

menu or twice (2) to access the contrast on stk2 menu.
8. Press the Enter button to access the contrast on stk1 menu.
9. Use the Right or Left Arrow to move sideways, use the Up Arrow
and Down Arrow button to increase the numeric value.
Max value is 9.
10. Make the necessary modifications and press the Enter button.

Follow this process until the settings are acceptable. The default value

2.5 Adjusting The Left Margin
The left margin adjustment unit is 1/10 mm which corresdponds to the
print area motor step. The following Thirteen (13) STEPS describe the
procedure for adjusting the left margin:
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock. The printer’s display will read:

2. Press the On line button once to take the printer off-line. The printer’s

menu.

2.6 Adjusting The Top Margin
The top margin adjustment unit is 1/8 mm which corresponds to the
printhead resolution. The following Thirteen (13) STEPS describe the
procedure for adjusting the top margin:
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock. The printer’s display will read:

2.7 Adjusting the Bursting Position
The ideal bursting position is when the burster blade hits the perforations,
i.e. the separation between the two adjacent documents. The following
thirteen (13) STEPS describes the procedure to adjust the cutter for
optimal performance.
1. Make sure that the printer is powered ON, On line light is lit, and
loaded with fanfold, ATB2, thermal paper stock. Refer to section
2.1 Loading Stock. The printer’s display will read:

Stock bin 2: this is all a place holder while IER begins the work on
disabling bin 2

2.9 Downloading Printer Software
The IER software can be found on the Sabre SIG web site. The following
SEVEN (7) STEPS describe the procedure to copy the software to a
diskette after the user has downloaded to a workstation.
1. Locate the zip files
a. IER 517 Ver 95618201IER.zip – printer software
2. Double click the zip file. A winzip window should appear.
3. Click the Extract ICON.
4. A window will appear asking where you would like to extract the files.
5. Insert a blank floppy into the floppy drive of the workstation.
6. From the menu select A: and press the Extract button.
7. Open Windows Explorer and access the A drive to validate file was
copied to the diskette.

4.3 Periodic Maintenance
IER recommends maintenance on the IER 517 every three months or
10,000 documents. This schedule will however depend on the printer
operating conditions (quality of the media used, dusty atmosphere, etc.)
The periodic maintenance recommended for this printer consists of these
four things:

4.3.1 Removing Dust from the Printer Interior
Before starting any maintenance operations, make sure the AC
power cord is disconnected from the printer.
1. Remove the media from the printer.
2. Power the printer off.
3. Remove the power cord.
4. Use the cleaning kit dust remover and blow compressed gas.
 Into the front output slot of the printer
 Into the rear feeder(s)
5. Open the front cover and the printing module. Allso open the
secured stock compartment cover.
6. Use the can of comprsses gas to remove dust from the
mechanical assembly, the sensors, rear feeder(s) and paper
path.

4.3.2 Cleaning The Printhead and the Platen
A cleaning kit (S32129A) is available for the IER 517. To use the
cleaning kit for cleaning the printhead and platen follow the
instructions below.
1. Power the printer off.
2. Dampen a soft cloth with cleaning solution from the cleaning kit.
3. Carefully rub the platen (turn the platen by hand to be able to
clean the entire surface). On completion of this operation, dry
the platen using the dust remover.
4. To clean the print head, use the CrushTube Swab tm from the
cleaning kit.
 Remove the tube from the cardboard sleeve.
 Reinsert it in the opposite direction, swab side out.
 Crush the tube at the dot between the forefinger and the
thumb.
 Press the swab against a clean and even surface, so it gets
dampened with liquid from the tube.
5. Using the CrushTube Swab tm, clean the entire line of printhead
heating elements.
4.3.3 Cleaning the Magnetic Head
A cleaning kit (S32129A) is available for the IER 517. To use the
cleaning kit for cleaning the printhead and platen follow the
instructions below.
1. Power the printer off.
2. To clean the Magnetic head, use the CrushTube Swab tm from
the cleaning kit.
 Remove the tube from the cardboard sleeve.
 Reinsert it in the opposite direction, swab side out.
 Crush the tube at the dot between the forefinger and the
thumb.
 Press the swab against a clean and even surface, so it
gets dampened with liquid from the tube.
3. Using the CrushTube Swab tm, rub the entire surface of the
magnetic head.

4.3.4 Final Check
Having completed the above printer maintenance, perform the
following:
1. Close the printing module and the front cover.
2. Power up the printer and load the stock. Refer to section
3. Print a test document to check for correct printer operation.
4.4 Clearing Jams
If a jam occurs the first thing you should try is to press the Clear button
once to eject the jammed document automatically from the printer. The
following Four (4) Steps describe the procedure to clear the jam in the
IER 517 ATB2 printer if they do not clear automatically.
1. Open the front cover and the printing module. Locate the document
causing the problem
2. Remove the jammed document.
3. Close the printing module and the front cover. Press the Clear button
to confirm removal of the jammed document
4. Reload stock into the printer.
