WINTER/SPRING 2010 COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES
1. WOODCARVING
Course Description: This beginner’s carving class is an introduction to power carving
using rotary tools, carving layout, texturing, preparation for painting, and painting your
project. The instructor has over thirty years of carving experience and has been teaching
for the last ten years. You will need to purchase rough wood blocks from the instructor
($25-$35 depending upon size). Participants will use Dremel’s newest XPR tool and
accessories. Participants will be carving a Black Bass. Limited to 12 carvers.

2. ADVANCED KNITTING
Course Description: This four week class is for those knitters who know the basics but
would like to go to the next level. Participants should bring a project they wish to work
on and supply their own needles and yarn. In this class you will receive assistance on
individual projects of your choice.

3. CHINA PAINTING
Course Description: Learn the art of porcelain painting by an instructor who has taught
across the country for thirty-five years. Each student will learn to paint a piece of china.
The china is fired between each session and upon completion of painting. All china
pieces, supplies and firing time are supplied by instructor. (Examples shown below)

4. OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING
Course Description: Learn to create beautiful paintings in oil or acrylic. Learn color
mixing, brush handling techniques, and how to design and plan a painting. There will be
a demonstration every class. Individualized instruction will be provided to assist students
in completing successful paintings. Painting supplies are provided by students. A supply
list will be sent upon registration.

5. WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Course Description: Learn techniques to paint wonderful watercolors. Learn color
mixing, flowing wet-in-wet colors, painting color washes and creating special effects.
Learn methods to compose and design a successful painting. There will be a
demonstration every class. Individualized instruction will be a part of every class.
Painting supplies are provided by students. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

6. BALLROOM AND SOCIAL DANCING I
Course Description: This four week course will cover a variety of dance steps
including: Waltz, Fox Trot & Cha Cha. Six couples are needed to run this class, so get
your friends to join you and make this a fun filled night out! Students should wear
comfortable clothing and shoes.

10. STOP SMOKING WITH HYPNOSIS
Course Description: Smoking is something learned…Now is the time to unlearn!
Hypnotherapy works at achieving the strength to resist. It is designed to aid in
eliminating the desire. In this two night Stop Smoking workshop you will examine the
history, effects, benefits and problems of smoking. You will experience four necessary
steps to take to quit smoking and three simple steps to create Self-hypnosis anywhere –
anytime.

11. QUILTING YOUR TOP
Course Description: Do you have a top that you have constructed but don’t know what
to do to get the quilting done? This class will show you how to choose quilt designs, how
to properly mark your top, including calculating border designs. It will also teach you
how to layer the top, backing and batting. You will then learn how to approach getting
the whole top through your domestic machine and quilting it. This is a two day class.
The first day we will cover choosing designs and marking the top. The second class will
cover pin basting the three layers together and quilting the project. Please arrive promptly
at 8:30 a.m. for setup so class can begin at 9:00 a.m. Student must provide their own
sewing machine. Brown bag lunch or takeout from a local restaurant.

12. PIECED BORDERS I
Course Description: Are you interested in trying different borders for your quilt? In
this class you will learn how to do different types of pieced borders. You will not
complete a project in this class, but will leave with samples of different types of borders
for your quilts Please arrive promptly at 8:30 a.m. for setup so class can begin at 9:00
a.m. Student must provide their own sewing machine. Brown bag lunch or takeout from

13. BEGINNING QUILTMAKING
Course Description: This class is for those who have not quilted before. We will cover
rotary cutting, strip piecing, basic quilting and binding. You will construct a
placement(s) in class. This class will be held in conjunction with National Quilting Day.
Fabric kits and batting will be supplied. Please arrive promptly at 8:30 a.m. for setup so

Bake, Assemble and Decorate an Easter Bunny Hutch
Royal Icing and Rolled Fondant, Rubber Stamp Imprinting and much more…
Course Description: Learn to bake, assemble and decorate a fun, festive Easter Egg
Factory or Bunny Hutch like the pros. Come and decorate sweet and whimsical treats for
the favorite bunnies and chicks in your life. All skill levels welcome. On the first night
of class you will need to bring a batch of prepared raw cookie dough from a recipe that
will be supplied by the instructor, cookie sheets and a rolling pin with rolling pin rings, if
you have them. Also a base and box for transport, will be needed. The first evening of
class you will cut out, rubber stamp, bake and assemble your creation. The second
evening of class you will start to decorate and embellish your creation. The final night of
class you will take your completed creation home. Royal Icing, Fondant, recipes,

Cupcake Decorating - Buttercream, Royal Icing and Rolled Fondant
A Decorated Cupcake for Every Month of the Year
Course Description: Learn to decorate cupcakes for every month of the year. Come
and decorate cupcakes for New Years Eve to Christmas and everything in between with
Buttercream, Royal Icing, Rolled Fordant and much more. Students will need to bring 12
plain cupcakes per class, decorating tips (list will be supplied by instructor) plus a
container for transport. Decorating materials will be supplied.

20. STAMPIN’ UP HOMEMADE CARDS
Course Description: Why buy expensive store-bought cards when you can make your
own with a personal touch. Come learn to hand stamp all-occasion greeting cards. We
will create 10 cards each session. At each class learn new techniques as we focus on
different designs and styles of cards. Students must bring adhesive of their choice
(double sided tape). All other materials will be provided. Please indicate on your

21. AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING TRAINING
Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide youth who are planning to
babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for
children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn
how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children
behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Students will receive a
Babysitter’s Training Handbook, Emergency Reference Guide and Babysitters Training
CD-Rom. Participants must be at least 11 years old.

24. COMPUTER BASICS 101
Course Description: This two-night course will help demystify your computer. This is
an entry-level course. We will cover a variety of topics both hardware & software.
Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively use your web browser to search the
internet; precautions to take to help prevent viruses, spyware, spam etc...; setting up an
email account, sending & receiving emails and attachments, and basic file management.

25. USING YOUR NEW DIGITAL CAMERA
Course Description: Got a new digital camera and not sure how to work all the bells
and whistles? This two night workshop will help you get acquainted with your new
camera and help you discover the excitement of digital photography. You will learn to
utilize the distinctive features of your camera as well as how to maximize your photo
opportunities. This is a hands on class so bring your cameras! Class size is limited to
insure individualized attention, so sign up early to get a spot. This is a two evening

26. EDITING YOUR DIGITAL PHOTOS
Course Description: This two night course takes the confusion out of digital
photography and your computer. We will cover how to download images from your
camera and make back up discs. Learn the basics of photo editing such as cropping and
prepare images to send via email. We will fix common problems such as red eye, images
too dark or too bright and much, much more! Learn the secrets to make your images look
their best. You are welcome to bring your laptops (not required). The course will use
Adobe Photoshop Elements to edit images. Elements is available through most retailers
and as well as on-line. Alternatively, participants can download GIMP, a free Photoshop

31. HAPKIDO - THE KOREAN ART OF SELF-DEFENSE
Course Description: In this Korean Martial Art class students will learn simple and
effective self-defense techniques including kicks, strikes, throws and joint-locks. The
curriculum is open-ended allowing students to seek rank and progress through the art.
Students should wear comfortable clothing that covers the knees and elbows, though
uniforms are available for purchase.
