North Marion High School is located in a rural setting on sixty acres, twelve miles north of Ocala, and one-half mile east of Highway 441. The NMHS attendance area is approximately 620 square miles. North Marion High School has a diverse population. Student demographics are as follows: 59.7% white, 26.5 % African-American, 9% Hispanic, .05 Aisian, .03 Indian/ Alaskan, and 4.0% other. About 47% of the student body is economically disadvantaged and 60% of students are on free or reduced lunch. The mobility rate (students moving in and out of school) is approximately 35 %. NMHS serves students of which 90% are eligible for bus transportation. School North Marion High School is a comprehensive four year public high school enrolling approximately 1316 students in 9-12 grade. North Marion High School is accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and is a Cambridge University Centre. Curriculum North Marion High School offers a comprehensive curriculum which includes college preparatory and general diploma studies. The academic program is organized on a seven period day schedule. A specialized program in biotechnology, one of the few offered in the state of Florida is also offered here. Elective programs offered at NMHS include: Agriculture, Air Force JROTC, Auto Mechanics, Band, Chorus, Criminal Justice, Digital Design, Dance, Health Science, Journalism, Television Production, Web Design, Yearbook. Cambridge AICE: The top academic students at North Marion High School participate in the University of Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program. Courses are identified by AICE. Cambridge AICE courses are offered in AS/A Biology, AS English Language, AS Environmental Management, AS General Paper, AS/A History (European, International and United States), AS Literature in English, AS/A Mathematics (with Statistics),AS Marine Science, AS Psychology and AS/A Thinking Skills. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in correlation with the AICE program. Dual Enrollment (DE) is offered through a cooperative program with College of Central Florida in which students earn both high school and college credits. These courses are designated by college course numbers consisting of alpha-numeric designations. Pre AICE/IGCSE classes are offered in Pre AICE English Language, Pre AICE Math 1-III, Pre AICE Biology, Pre AICE Chemistry, Pre-AICE Spanish I-II, Pre-AICE French I-II, Pre-Calculus, Anatomy and Physiology Honors. These courses are identified by the letters “Pre-AICE” or “HON” and flagged on the transcript. North Marion High School Magnet Program offers students with a particular interest the opportunity to participate in the Cambridge AICE program or our Biotechnology program an opportunity to attend outside our normal attendance zone. Applications are required and more information about these programs can be found on our website at www.northmarionhighschool.org Cambridge AICE Program North Marion High School became a Cambridge International Centre in August 2007. NMHS offered its first set of Cambridge AICE exams in June 2008. The University of Cambridge awards the AICE Diploma for students who earn a total of six credits by passing General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary examinations with at least one exam in each of the three subject areas. Students earning the AICE Diploma qualify for the Florida Bright Futures Academic Scholars Award. As of June 2012, NMHS has an overall pass rate of 64%. Class Rank, GPA Computations, and Grading System: A weighted Grade Point Average is computed by including all course work in all high school subjects taken in grades 7 – 12. Class Rank is determined by comparing weighted Grade Point Averages. Valedictorian and Salutatorian are calculated on the best 24 credits that meet Florida Bright Futures minimum requirements. Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrolled (DE), and Honors course grades receive extra weight. Ranks are updated each year. North Marion High School uses a 5-point grading scale to evaluate academic work. Please see chart.
