Evangelical Christian Academy Instructional Guide: Course Description Department: Art Course: Junior High Art A Philosophy Statement: Realizing God for his Glory created each student with individual strengths and weaknesses; Jr. High Art A will endeavor to expose students to basic art fundamentals through a variety of art mediums and materials using the seven basic elements of art; line, shape, color, texture, space, value and form. Students will be introduced to great American artists and works of art of our cultural heritage as they experience critiquing art and developing an awareness of artistic elements. Practical projects will give students opportunities to apply these fundamental skills and concepts in the areas of drawing and three dimensional art. Course Objectives: 1. Students will know and reflect God’s truth in the visual arts as a form of communication. 2. Students will recognize the grammar of the visual arts and apply the elements of art, the principles of design, and the sensory and expressive features of Commercial and Graphic Art, and Watercolors. 3. Students understand and apply visual arts materials, tools, techniques, and processes. 4. Students will relate the visual arts to various historical and cultural traditions. 5. Students will learn the techniques of critiquing by analyzing and evaluating the characteristics, the merits, and meaning of works of their art as well as the art of others. Recognize the scriptural role of God, the teacher, and the student as it pertains to the art classroom Create an environment with hands on activities that they might enjoy God’s creation while exploring and learning how to give form to their creative ideas, feelings and perceptions. Identify and demonstrate effective use of the elements of design in their drawings and sculptures. Identify several prominent traditional American artists and their style. Analyze and critique art using artistic concepts and art vocabulary Be cognizant of “seeing as an artist’, (awareness of shapes, lines, details, & proportions) Illustrate basic understanding of perspective (foreground, middle ground, background, vanishing points, & horizon line). Demonstrate effective use of positive and negative shapes in their sculptures Demonstrate effective use of surface textures in their sculptures Recognize artists and the Psychedelic Art History, style, and artists. Create a blown-up picture of a vehicle using the Psychedelic Art format to drawing. Students will be exposed to Right brain, left brain concepts. Students will create a Collage at home answering the question, “Who am I?” Students will watch a demonstration using the Lets Draw approach to drawing and then create their own individual drawing using this technique. Students will be presented with a James Michael handout, then create their own individual drawing by copying this technique of a BMX bike. Students will be presented with several James Michael drawing, then create their own individual enlarged drawing using a Psychedelic style. Students will research and present an oral report on an American Artist. Students will design their own “Elements of Design” poster. Three-Dimensional Art Students will be exposed to three-dimensional concepts and vocabulary.. Students will play “Sculptionary” using oil-based clay incorporating three-dimensional concepts. Students will be shown examples of artistic sculptures and then create their own individual three-dimensional busts. Using learned concepts, students will create their own clay sculpture of the animal of their choice. Using learned concepts, students will create their own abstract clay sculpture. Assessments: Students will be regularly assessed on their class participation and their productivity. Student homework assignments will be used and graded to reinforce their classroom experiences as needed. Periodic quizzes and tests will be given to assess the students understanding of the information presented, discussed and defined during class. Individual and group projects will be given to assess the students application of materials and techniques presented. The student, the teacher, and the class will discuss, evaluate, and critique each student’s projects.
