LEHIGH UNIVERSITY SELECTS EYP TO DESIGN NEW HORIZONS INITIATIVE,

CREATING VIBRANT ENVIRONMENTS FOR 21 ST CENTURY LEARNING

JULY 21, 2014 – Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., selected EYP Architecture & Engineering to program, plan, and design for its new Mountaintop program, integrating a variety of academic, research, and student life functions on the university’s Mountaintop campus. The multi-phase project will transform two former Bethlehem Steel research facilities into a truly unique live/learn/research environment that brings together students and faculty while fostering a culture of collaboration.

Lehigh’s vision is to transform the buildings into revolutionary learning spaces that inspire and challenge students, further energize faculty, and allow the university to redefine 21 st century teaching and learning.

The Mountaintop campus, just up the hill from the main campus, was originally built in the 1950s and

60s by Bethlehem Steel, and housed the company’s research arm. Lehigh University began purchasing buildings many years ago, and currently occupies several for various academic and research functions.

This project will repurpose and renovate the mid-century modern high-bay industrial buildings, an estimated 160,000 gsf of space, into a combination of collaboration spaces, studios, workshops and laboratories, and housing and dining facilities, while respectfully reinventing the beautiful mountaintop site and its dramatic landscape.

The EYP 2014 initial project design and construction scope included upgrades to several key building infrastructure systems, with only select architectural modifications to begin the transformation: creation of student project spaces, team collaboration areas, specialized workshops, and specialized research labs. The scope for 2015, as well as future phases, will advance the initial transformation

further; planning and design will emerge in response to the needs of the academic and research programs being housed within, incrementally, as they grow and evolve over time.

Lehigh Preseident Alice Gast passionately described both the rarity of the programmatic opportunity at hand, and her vision for the successful transformation of the buildings and site; it is to become a ‘new paradigm for creating innovative and persuasive leaders’ and a destination that brings people together and fosters a culture of innovation.

Commented EYP Project Executive Ann Barolak, AIA, “This transformative undertaking will significantly enhance learning and research opportunities on the Lehigh campus. By modernizing and repurposing these very special buildings, students will be exposed to new modes of teaching and discovery, creating a unique new model in higher education.” She continued, “We are proud to partner with Lehigh, helping them advance their very compelling strategic vision.”
