SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE
OBJECTIVES
To demonstrate a sound broad based knowledge of the diseases and disorders of dogs and cats
and of the physiology and nutrition of the healthy dog and cat.
Candidates will be examined orally and by written examination. The latter will comprise 2 x 2
hour papers, the first paper concentrating on general principles and the second on applied/clinical
aspects with emphasis on problem solving.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SUBJECT
The candidate should study the following, particular attention being paid to pathophysiology and
the approach to clinical problem solving.

Diseases of the liver and pancreas
Diseases of the respiratory system
Diseases of the cardiovascular system
Diseases of the blood and blood forming organs
Diseases of the locomotor system
Diseases of the nervous system, the eye and ear
Diseases of the urinary system
Diseases of the reproductive system
Diseases of the skin
Metabolic and endocrine disorders
Genetic disorders
Disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance, acidosis and alkalosis
Fluid therapy
Viral diseases
Rickettsial diseases
Bacterial and mycoplasmal diseases
Fungal diseases
Parasitic diseases
Poisoning (chemical and biological)
Tumours and tumour therapy (including cytotoxic, immunotherapy)
