POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN INTEGRATED SERVICE IMPROVEMENT Personalisation and Outcomes: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches About this course The organisation of systems, services and support to ensure that they are personalised and focus on the outcomes important to people using services and unpaid carers has been identified as being critical to the future of public services in Scotland and beyond (Christie, 2011). Within a Scottish policy context recent policy and forthcoming legislation demands that health and social care organisations shift from being service and needs-led to outcomes focussed and personalised, including through the promotion of self-directed approaches to organising support. This course run by the School of Health in Social Science at the University of Edinburgh is aimed at those leading change within health and social care organisations and provides an opportunity for students to critically reflect on the relevant theory, policy and evidence from research and practice to inform approaches within their own local area. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this course students will be able to: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the different theoretical, political and policy perspectives on and drivers towards personalisation and outcomes focussed practice. Locate current systems and practice within this theoretical, political and policy landscape. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges to the implementation of personalisation and outcomes focussed approaches in practice, from the perspective of people using services and unpaid carers, front line staff, managers and strategic decision makers. Identify opportunities and factors supporting the implementation of personalised and outcomes focussed approaches at a local and national level. Reflect on current policy and evidence from research and practice and consider implications for the development of practice within their own organisation. Learning experience The course is taught through three one day seminars, one month apart. In addition students are supported to develop their thinking and skills between seminar sessions through the completion of structured tasks. Students passing the end of course assignment will gain 20 credits which can be used towards a postgraduate qualification at the University of Edinburgh within a five year period. Dates and Venue The course will be held at the University of Edinburgh. Each full day seminar will run from 10am – 4.00pm on Thursday 19th September Thursday 24th October Thursday 21st November Who should apply?
