The study course deepens theoretical knowledge, develops students’ vocabulary through communicative activities, teaches students to describe meanings of new words, compare definitions of the words in different dictionaries. Topics of the course: Lexicography as a branch of linguistics. Headwords of the dictionary. Types of linguistic dictionaries. Content and peculiarities of entries. Lexicography and etymology. Lexicography and semantics. Stylistics and lexicography. The arrangement of definitions in the entry. The word and context. Electronic dictionaries. Electronic corpus. The short history of English lexicography in comparison with the Lithuanian one. Modern dictionaries. Application of dictionaries in practical work. Readings 1.
