Radiology for Dental Assistants
November 2-3, 2012
Course Description and -Overview:
This will be a sixteen hour hands-on course, including adequate didactic background material, designed to
conform with Rule #4 of statutes, rules and regulations of the State of Nebraska Board of Dental examiners and
the renewal of registration in the State of Iowa. As a prerequisite, dental office experience is desirable.
Day 1:
I. Principles of Diagnostic Radiology
II. Intra-oral techniques (lecture and practice)
III. Radiographic landmarks
Completion of Day I satisfies Iowa requirements for renewal of registration
Day 2
I. Review - quick overview of material presented first day
II. Practice in radiology clinic using Dexter and XCP instrument
III. Mount and evaluate films taken on Dexter. Do necessary retakes
IV. State regulations and the legal aspects of dental radiology
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
 Identify the properties and characteristics of the radiation beam and the factors involved in quality imaging.
 Be knowledgeable of radiation safety measures.
 Be able to recognize and use radiographic landmarks
 Have the ability to take and mount a full-mount set of radiographs.
 Be familiar with the state regulations and legal aspects of dental radiology
Jody Miller, D.A., B.S. is past Director of the Iowa Western Community College Dental Assisting Program and co-founder of the
Radiology course.
Cathy Van Winkle, DA, B.S., is a co-founder of the Radiology course. She taught Radiology at Iowa Western Community College in the
dental assisting program.
Beverly Dawson, DA is sterilization supervisor for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition she teaches in the Radiology for Dental
Students classes.
Jan Owens, DA is supervisor of dental assistants in Pediatric Dentistry.
Course Information:
This course will be presented at Creighton University School of Dentistry. Continental breakfast and final
check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Class will begin at 8:00 a.m. both days. Since this is a limited
attendance course, a cancellation fee of $50 will be charged for cancellations received later than 72 hours prior
to the course. Tuition includes instrument usage, handouts, continental breakfasts, lunches and other amenities.
