DENTAL RESIDENTS – MEDICINE ROTATION INTRODUCTION: The dental residency prepares recent dental graduates to: 1) Function effectively in a hospital; 2) Assess the medical risk for each patient and modify dental treatment accordingly; 3) Anticipate, recognize and manage medical emergencies which may occur during dental treatment; 4) Provide oral health care treatment in an operating room; 5) Manage pain and anesthesia in delivering outpatient care using modalities beyond local anesthesia; 6) Acquire knowledge and skills to provide complex oral health care. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES FOR THE MEDICINE ROTATION: Training and experience will be provided in: 1) Taking, recording and interpreting a complete medical history; 2) Understanding the indications for and interpretation of laboratory studies and other techniques used in the diagnosis of systemic and oral disease; 3) Using the techniques of physical examination (i.e., inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation; 4) Interpreting the physical evaluation performed by a physician with an understanding of the process, terms and techniques employed; 5) Preparing the patient record, including notation of medical history, physical examination, orders, etc; 6) Prescribing treatment and medication; 7) Requesting and responding to requests for consultations from physicians and other health care providers; 8) Anticipation, recognition and management of medical emergencies which may occur during dental treatment.
