Here is a simple list of features you should always consider.
Has your company or organisation an Equalities Policy which promotes inclusive design?
Do you understand and actively abide by the Social Model of
Disability?
 A ramped alternative to a stepped entrance.
 Doors with adequate opening widths.
 Parking bays for all disabled car users with usage properly policed. (See left)
 Dropped kerbs and tactile paving on pedestrian routes and in car parks.
 Lifts, for major changes in levels.
 Handrails to all changes in level.
 Unisex toilets for disabled people.
 Signpost:


 the routes to entrances to buildings,
 the location of car parking spaces for disabled people.
 Provide signs with:

Sans serif text on a contrasting background
 

Raised letters.
Braille.
 
Pictograms.
 Reception desks with recessed areas and low sections.
 Good, balanced lighting.
 Communication aids, eg induction loops.
 Audio and visual indicators for alarms and information systems.
 Clear desire lines for the visually impaired person, together with tactile cues and guides.

And these are the common mistakes to avoid
X Use large areas of glazing in particular, highly reflective glass - it’s dangerous and confusing for the visually impaired person.
X lgnore size recommendations, eg on ramps and in toilets.
X Allow dark interiors.
X Block footways and entrances with advertising material.
X Have reception desks with high counters and security screens.
X Have ‘back-door-‘ entrances for disabled people.
X Install lifts that are too small - they’re expensive and will be wasted - think about everyone who might use them.
X Install revolving doors with no alternative - many people from children to the elderly don’t like them.
