C. Scientific Activity
Scientific activity of the Association consisted in organization of scientific conferences
as well as in paper and oral presentations and field work.

Tectonics of the Red River Fault Zone and Geology of Northern

The international conference “Tectonics of the Red River Fault Zone and Geology of
Northern Vietnam” took place in Vietnam (Hanoi and Sa Pa), in November 23-30th,
2009. It was organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the PolishVietnamese cooperation in the field of geology by: the Institute of Geological
Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of Geological Sciences of the
Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology, and Galicia Tectonic Group.
During the conference, members of our association: Anna Świerczewska, Antoni
Tokarski and Witold Zuchiewicz obtained medals awarded by: the Vietnamese
Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and
Environment, Geological Society of Vietnam, as well as medals “For Peace and
Friendship among Nations, whereas Nguyen Quoc Cuong and Nguyen Trong Yem
were decorated by the medal of the Galicia Tectonic Group. A more detailed account
of these events is comprised in a recent issue of „Przegląd Geologiczny” no. 58/5.

In May-July 2009, members of GTG carried out observations of gravels bearing
fractured clasts in Namibia (Namib Desert).
E. GTG scientific awards
Staszek Brud Award
The 2009 Staszek Brud Award, awarded on May 15th to Emilie Kubiková (Praque) for
presentation of the paper “Redistribution of zirconium in rock-forming minerals during
high grade metamorphism – implication for crystallization of metamorphic zircons in
felsic granulitem” by E. Kubiková, J. Konopásek and J. Košler
Bohdan Świderski Award
In January 2009, the GTG Association Board decided about The Bohdan Świderski
Award for the year 2008. The award went (for the second time) to Vratislav Hurai
(Bratislava) for authorship (first author) of the paper “High-density nitrogen inclusions
in barite from a giant siderite vein: implications for Alpine evolution of the Variscan
basement of Western Carpathians, Slovakia” published in Journal of Metamorphic
Geology, vol. 26 (vol. 26).
