The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology
Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Programme
Our 4 year PhD Programme on the Molecular Basis of Biological Mechanisms is funded
by the Wellcome Trust, and taught and administered within the Astbury Centre for
Structural Molecular Biology .
Understanding complex biological systems in structural, mechanistic and quantitative
terms is a key and growing area that will be the forefront of biology for decades to come.
How the complex macromolecules of life are assembled/disassembled and how they
interact and function are central questions of immense importance. The ability to
interrogate and interfere with biological processes using designer molecules, together
with the explosion of information from genomics projects and systems biology are also
stimulating new and exciting opportunities in this area, with potentials for tailor-made
chemical intervention and customized medicines. The philosophy of our Wellcome Trust
4-year PhD program is to expose the most able students to modern biomolecular science
in its widest context and to the power of combining different disciplines from day one, so
that barriers between traditional subjects are erased and young scientists emerge well
equipped to tackle the most challenging questions in biology today.
The programme is now entering its ninth successful year.

Graduate Training Programme
The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology's (ACSMB) strategy is based on its
mission statement: "The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology will promote
interdisciplinary research of the highest standard on the structure and function of
biological molecules, biomolecular assemblies and complexes using physico-chemical,
molecular biological and computational approaches." and is built on more than 70 years'
history of cutting edge research at the interface between the physical and life sciences at
the University. ACSMB brings together, and exploits, the knowledge and skill base of
outstanding individuals in our parent disciplines in a dynamic research environment, so
that together, key questions in biology can be addressed and quantified using novel
methods of experiment, modelling and analysis. We aim to recruit outstanding research
students in areas of strategic and fundamental importance and to guide and train them to
internationally competitive standards. We also provide specific and generic training that
helps students to continually develop a wide range of transferrable skills for use in
research or the broader job market. Students are encouraged to attend and participate in
national and international meetings relevant to their research and to become part of the
international scientific community.
Training provided
Specific courses provide training in research techniques (making use of our excellent,
dedicated core staff in physics, chemistry and biological sciences), experimental design
and data assessment, scientific writing, reference management, the research environment
and use of IT, as well as safety and statutory regulations. All students also take part in a
programme of generic skills training either locally or via the University's Staff and
Departmental Developmental Unit (SDDU). This training is divided into the following
headings: Information Skills, Research Methodology, Ethics, Communication and
Writing Skills, Interpersonal Skills and Personal Effectiveness. Students are encouraged
to attend other specific courses in thesis preparation, and speaking skills for research as
well as the UKGrad School and the researchers in residence scheme. In addition, courses
on IPR and Patents, Marketing and The Market, and SME and related issues provide
opportunities for interested students to develop interests in the commercial sector.
Student Support & Mentoring
Monitoring of student progression and assessment of student performance is rigorously
undertaken to ensure smooth and steady progress to the final degree. Many of our
projects are interdisciplinary and students therefore have both a main supervisor and a cosupervisor to advise and guide their studies. In all cases, each student also has an
academic staff member as an advisor, whose role is to oversee the student's well-being
while not being involved on a day-to-day basis in the research. A postgraduate
representative sits on the Faculty of Biological Sciences Graduate School committee to
express student opinion on important matters. The University and the Student's Union
have excellent support facilities in case of problems.

approval to submit application to the University of Kerala before the prescribed
deadline.
4. Students are expected to submit the thesis before completion of the fellowship
tenure of 4 years. Extension beyond this time will be given after recommendation
from the MC.
5. Students not completing their PhD within four years (or an additional 6 month
extension if approved by MC) will also lose the right to continue staying in
institute accommodation.
Constitution and Functioning of Mentoring Committees (MC)
1. Each PhD student has to establish a Mentoring Committee (MC) to provide timely
and continued advice. The MC helps to set logical goals for the completion of the
dissertation and monitors progress toward completion of degree requirements.
2. RGCB has set forth specific and stringent guidelines to ensure that every student
obtains maximal benefit from this system.
3. The student's MC is formed in consultation with the student and the student's
dissertation advisor. The committee will have three members in addition to the
dissertation advisor, who will be the coordinator. One of the members can be
from other institutes. The Director will approve the constitution of MC. Each
student bears primary responsibility for setting up the MC and ensuring that it
meets in a timely fashion.
4. The MC will meet once in 6 months every year till submission of dissertation.
5. At the first meeting of the MC, the student will be asked in detail of his and her
interests and goals. A discussion will be initiated as to possible topics that could
be given as the PhD dissertation problem. The student then has to come back at a
second MC meeting as soon as possible with a proposal prepared in the DBT
project format, with a power point presentation. If the committee approves the
proposal, the student may proceed to submit the application to the University of
Kerala. If the proposal is not acceptable to the committee, the student will be only
able to submit it at the next PhD session of the University
6. The coordinator of the MC will file reports of the committee meeting in the
prescribed format. The report signed by all committee members immediately
upon conclusion of the meeting will be submitted to the Director. A copy of the
report will be also given to the student. All reports will be kept in a student file
maintained by the RGCB Projects Management Division, which will be made
available to the MC at its last meeting before submission of the dissertation.
7. Students will be allowed to submit yearly reports to their fellowship funding
agencies, assessment for up gradation to SRF, etc only if approved by the MC.
8. The student will be allowed to submit the dissertation to the University of Kerala
only if approved by the MC at its last meeting. Hence at this meeting, the student
will make a final pre-submission presentation. Students must have at least one
published peer reviewed paper by this time.
9. The dissertation must show original treatment of a fitting subject, contain a
scholarly review of the pertinent literature, give evidence of independent research,
and be clearly, logically, and carefully written.
10. The PhD dissertation is expected to contain a substantial amount of independent
research work of publishable quality. In addition to chapters of research, each
dissertation must contain introduction and conclusion chapters that present the
themes of the dissertation and summarize the accomplishments. In some cases the
student may have done all of the work in the dissertation while often portions of
the dissertation result from collaborative research. In all dissertations containing
collaborative results, the dissertation should indicate concisely the individual
contributors to the work.
