Gravity Powered Wheeled Vehicle Project

Part 1- The Car
PURPOSE: To construct gravity powered wheeled vehicle.
MATERIALS:
You may use any materials to build your car EXCEPT: pre-made toy cars
(including pre-made wheels), Pinewood Derby cars, legos, or kinex.
You must prove that your project comes from recycled materials (Don’t buy anything!)
No Styrofoam as it is awful for the environment.
Please use proper judgment on the materials you bring to school.
RULES:
1. Vehicle may be no longer than 30 cm (this is your maximum allowed).
2. Vehicle must have a mass under 500 grams (this is your maximum allowed).
3. Vehicle must be gravity powered only. No engines, rubber bands etc.
4. Vehicles must have a minimum of 2 axels and a body.
5. Vehicles must travel in a straight line at least 3 meters from the end of the ramp. The
distance the car travels will be measured and any deviation will result in a lower score.
6. Vehicles must be painted and/or decorated. Part of your grade is creativity.
7. Pay attention to the physics when designing your car (alignment, aerodynamics, fluid friction,
rolling friction).

Part 2- The Journal
(4 points)
1. Title Page including:
Names of student, Vehicle name, Date, Period
(10 points)
2. Two colored detailed drawings of the vehicle either
TOP, SIDE, FRONT, or REAR VIEW drawn to scale.
(21 points)
3. Daily entries from start to completion of work
accomplishments done on the project. These entries
must be dated and timed. Seven entries are required.
(Please elaborate and write at least 3 sentences per entry).
(5 points)
4. Acknowledgements. Where you found your supplies and who helped you.
This is where you thank those involved and those that inspired your gravity
car creation.
(10 points)
5. Calculations. You must show your work and use correct units.
