Alicia King Bowman Elementary School, Grade 5 Mrs. Arch, Cooperating Teacher October 14, 2005 Lesson title: The Human Skeletal System Subject Area: The Human Body Duration: 2 days, 30 min/day Topic The Human Skeletal System Content 1. The purpose of the skeletal system/bones 2. The structure of the skeletal system 3. The names of the parts/bones of the skeletal system Goals 1. Students will know the purpose and structure of the skeletal system 2. Students will know the names of the parts/bones of the skeletal system Objectives 1. Students will be able to point out on their body the location of specific bones. 2. Students will be able to label the bones of the human skeleton on a diagram. 3. Students will be able to identify/describe the location of the bones of the human skeletal system in words 4. Students will be able to describe the purpose of the human skeletal system 5. Students will be able to assemble the human skeletal structure 6. Students will be able to identify the # of bones in the human skeletal structure (at birth and in adulthood) Materials Used: 1. Worksheet 2. Website 3. skeletal cut-outs ( I will take an assembled skeleton and cut pieces to be put together) 4. glue 5. Blank Skeleton to be labeled 6. Word search puzzle Procedures: Introduction – Worksheet What is the skeletal system? Why do we have a skeletal system? How many bones are in the skeletal system? At birth? At maturity? Activities 1. Students will answer the questions on the worksheet using the website 2. We will go over these questions in large group 3. Students will get into 4 small groups (based on the classroom set-up) and use the skeletal cut-outs to piece together a skeleton together. 4. Then, as a large group, we will put a skeleton together starting with the skull labeling the parts as we go along a. Axial – vertebrae, skull, ribs, sternum b. Appendicular – scapula, clavicle, arm/hand bones, pelvic, leg, feet 5. Students will stand up and point out the location of bones on their bodies 6. Students will receive a worksheet to label the parts of the skeleton, and will use the key on the website to complete 7. Students will also use the key to complete the word search puzzle Homework: Activities 1 before the lesson, 6 and 7 after the lesson Evaluation A blank skeleton that the students will have to label, identify the proper terms of bones based on description of their placement, answer the question of the 1st worksheet. Technology The web-based lesson project will serve as homework help, aiding students in filling out the worksheet introduction to the lesson. Technology Frameworks 1.25 Identify and use navigation features of browser (e.g., “go”, “back”, “forward”). 1.26 Using a browser, “bookmark” a Web site for future reference. 1.27 Identify basic elements of a Web site (e.g., URL, hyperlinks, site map, etc.). The __________________________ skeleton and the __________________________________ skeleton Which of these contains the bones of the chest and head? __________________________________________________________ Which of these contains the bones of the arms, hands, legs, and arms? __________________________________________________________ Worksheet Key 1. 1st of the 2 major parts of the skeletal system that includes the bones of the arm, hands, legs, and feet 2. 2nd of the 2 major parts of the skeletal system that includes the skull 3. head bone 4. jaw bone 5. horseshoe-shaped bone in back of the throat 6. collarbone 7. bones of the neck 8. shoulder blade 9. chest bone 10. bone of the upper arm 11. bones that protect the lungs and heart 12. bones of the spine 13. straight bone of the forearm 14. curved bone of the forearm 15. bones of the lower back 16. hip bone 17. bone which forms part of the hip bone 18. wrist bones 19. bones of the palm 20. bones of the fingers and toes 21. longest bone of the body located in the leg 22. kneecap 23. leg bone connected to the tibia 24. shin bone 25. ankle bones 26. bones located on the front of the foot The Skeletal System Instructions: use the key on the website to find the description of the bone. Use the space next to the number to write the name of the bone, then find, and circle it in the puzzle.
