1 Day Introduction to Human Osteology
A one-day course suitable for those working in outdoor occupations, the rescue services, field archaeology and museums, or for those wanting a basic taster course in human and comparative osteology.
Please note, this course will involve handling both human and animal bones.

Introduction
This course will be taught in our main osteology laboratory using the department’s human skeletal reference collection. The course aims to provide participants with a basic overview of human skeletal anatomy in order to convey understanding and recognition of the various skeletal elements, and help participants gain confidence in dealing with skeletal material.
Course Content
Self-assessment
review your knowledge at the start and end of the day
gain confidence in dealing with skeletal material
eliminate uncertainty when bones are found
Introduction to the human skeleton
handle human bones
lay out a complete skeleton
learn to identify the different types of bones
Comparative osteology
handle domestic animal bones such as sheep, dog and pig
learn to distinguish between human and animal remains
Course Venue
The course will be held at Northgate House, the University of Sheffield’s Archaeology
Department on West Street. Northgate House is a five-minute tram-ride from Sheffield
Station and a five minute walk from the city centre.
Tea/coffee will be provided but lunch is not included in the price of the course. There is a wide choice of sandwich bars, pubs and restaurants less than two minutes walk from the department.
