Business Meeting Minutes for October 4, 2010
Call to Order
Meeting was brought to order by Grand Knight Paul Lee at 7:01 p.m. 19 members were present.
Prayer was offered by Fr. Ken Glaser and was followed by recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reading and Corrections to Previous Meeting Minutes
No corrections were submitted for approval. Minutes were approved by consensus.
Report of Admissions Committee –
One application was submitted for transfer into the Council (Antonio Planells) Motion to approve
made by Travis Hoing, seconded by Paul Gray- Motion Passed.
No applications were submitted for new membership into the Order.
Grand Knight’s Report
1. A letter was distributed to all Council members reminding us of the moral obligation to
participate in the upcoming election. As part of our “Faithful Citizenship”, we are asked to vote
on issues and candidates that are in line with the teaching of our Catholic faith. For more
information, log on to www.iowacatholicconference.org
a. Google in voting in Blackhawk County to see where you are able to vote.
2. The GK would like to send out a bi-annual newsletter. This would be mailed to all registered
council members and representatives from the state and supreme hierarchy. We would report
on the accomplishments of the Council in that past six-month period. Cost associated with
newsletter would be paper, printing, and postage to mail to 60-70 addresses
a. Motion to approve moved by Mark Wilcox, seconded by Chris Olesen. Motion Passed.
3. The GK explained the phrase “Vivat Jesus!”, and its connection to the Knights. For the full
explanation, visit our Council’s website kofc.ststephenuni.org.
4. All Grand Knights received a book from SK Anderson, “Posada- Meditations for Advent and
Christmas”. It is a celebration used by people of Hispanic origin, and the SK encourages all
Councils to consider incorporating this in their Council’s preparation of the birth of Christ.
5. The GK read excerpts from a letter from SD Laake about supporting a state-wide project to
purchase the book “Magnificant” for Iowa troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. GK proposed
the Council to contribute $50.00, and individuals can contribute through Ben Schafer.
a. Move to approve that the council will donate $50 to this project. Moved by Ben Schaffer,
seconded by John Hlas. Motion passed.
b. Contact Ben Schaffer by the 12th of November with donations
6. A significant amount of funds have been donated to the SSW on our behalf to help sponsor the
upcoming John Angotti concert. We have been asked to create an ad for the program. Any
volunteers?
a. Chris Olesen volunteered to ask someone.
7. Operation Andrew dinner will be Friday and the Archbishop will be in attendance. Help needed
with setup and clean up. Please be in the Social Hall kitchen by 4:30 to help set up and 6pm for
clean up. Everything will be finished by 8:00pm
Chaplain’s Report –
Things are going well. The Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale have seen membership
declining and are excited to see a young council. We need to start working together with the
other councils.
April 3rd, 2011 is the 20th anniversary of St. Stephen the Witness in the current building.
There are 11 individuals from St. Stephens that are attending the Andrew Dinner Wednesday
night, please pray for them.

Balance as of the November meeting- $ 727.18

We are in good standing with Supreme.

Church Director’s Report
Up to Christmas we will be running the Keep Christ in Christmas Campaign. Posters and Radio
Spots are available to aid in this project to spread the message. May need help with networking to
spread materials. Keep an eye on your email to see of ways to help. Nathan and Paul will be
contacting the radio stations with a CD of the ads to see if they will air them.
Community Director’s Report
Raking was successful, after 1 yard we are already out of bags
Spring Break trip will have 10 people attending
Going to Davenport for the service trip
Working with the Sisters of Humility to serve food
Family Director’s Report
Shoveling is a possibility in the near future
Unfinished Business
1. Tootsie roll sign up will be November 13th and 14th. If you could spare 30 minutes to help out
that would be much appreciated. This will be done at church and at tailgating.
2. You are also able to volunteer to help at the concession stand (3 to 6:30pm) with the St
Patrick’s council. WE do get some of the profits in relation to how many people we have help.
3. 2nd and 3rd degree ceremonies will be happening the 21st in Marion. There is also one in W.
Des Moines next weekend. Contact Travis Hoing (travis.hoing@live.com) if you are interested
in pursuing these. You must become a 3rd degree knight to hold an officer position.
New Business
1. We will distribute Stephen Waterman’s address out to the Knights so that we are able to support
him through his time at basic training. He has written the student center and could use some
encouragement.
2. GK brought up idea of supporting the SSW’s annual Thanksgiving Food Basket program. Move
to purchase 2 thanksgiving baskets made by Philip Cavin, seconded by Chad Hackenmiller.
Motion Passed.
a. Eric Moellers and Philip Cavin volunteered to go shopping for our council
b. Also if you could donate your time to drive to deliver these baskets it would be greatly
appreciated.
3. St. Stephen’s blood drive is November 11th. The Knights helped start the 1st blood drive with the
American Red Cross. Please consider donation blood or time by signing up at St Stephens
4. Election for Recorder for the remainder of the fraternal year (May 2011).

District Deputy Report – No Report
The Good of the Order
1. Nathan Link was presented with his October Knight of the Month Certificate.
2. Charter Members were presented with a certificate of recognition.
3. Nathan Link nominates Paul Lee for Knight of the Month for the month of November, seconded
by Paul Gray. Motion passed.

5. Collect print cartridges and old cell phones for a fundraiser that would bring in some money.
