Use the following checklist to assist you in the stage of proof reading and editing your work. Evidence must be shown on your draft that this has been thoroughly completed. MECHANICS OF WRITING INFORMATION Written sentences made sense: to me and to another reader. The topic is made clear to the reader. All information needed to answer the question/topic is included. Ideas are written in a logical order that could be understood. All information is accurate and appropriate to the audience. Information is written in the writer’s own words. Correct referencing is evident where the writer uses quotes. All unnecessary information to the topic has been removed. PUNCTUATION Punctuation has been used properly, including: - Capital letters in correct places: proper nouns, titles, start of sentences, abbreviations. (John Smith, Perth, My Story, Once upon a …) - Full stops ( . ) - Question marks ( ? ) - Exclamation marks ( ! ) - Commas ( , ) - Apostrophes for ownership (e.g. Mark’s) - Quotation marks (“Go Eagles”) - Apostrophes for contractions (e.g. I’ve) SENTENCES Sentences are joined using a range of appropriate words (e.g. and, but, then, because, so, yet, or, nevertheless) to form more interesting sentences. Sentences are developed appropriately by using: - Adjectives (e.g. tropical plant, European country, Japanese food). - Adverbs (e.g. quickly, soon, recently, slowly, gently). Each paragraph contains identified: - Statement (Topic sentence): Identify the topic - Explanation (Developing sentences): Build on the topic - Examples (Supporting sentences): examples, evidence to back up the topic. - Conclusion (Concluding sentence): wrap up and link to next paragraph. - More than 4 sentences SPELLING Spelling has been checked and corrected.
