ANTICIPATED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES :

 Acquire and implement strategies for establishing a 6 traits writing program at MVMS

 Gain insight into current writing programs.

 Lead the seventh grade humanities team in 6 traits writing.

 Work with the already established 6 traits writing leaders at MVMS.

 Attend 6 traits writing conference in Anaheim October 26- 28, 2005.

 Attend “Habits of Highly Effective Writing Teachers” Sept. 17-Oct. 22, 2005.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH ACTIVITIES (Including Timeline)

Acquiring New Learning Activities:

1.

Six Saturday morning "Habits of highly effective writing teachers" workshop ( 24 hours)

2.

Three day "6 traits writing conference" in Anaheim, Oct. 26-28 ( 24 hours)

3.

Seventh grade writing leader for 6 traits at MVMS ( 9 one-hour morning meetings plus rubric creation, lesson plans for team, etc.)

4.

Read and reflect on 6+1 Traits of Writing by Ruth Culham ( 8 hours)

Classroom Implementation Activities:

1.

“6 traits to-go” packets ( 10+ hours)

Packets will be made for each trait to accommodate the different designated subject areas.

In each “Traits To-Go” packet:

Picture book

8 1/2 x 11 placard with specific trait outlined for classroom display

Picture books as suggested by 6 traits leaders at various conferences/workshops

Plastic hanging bags for packet (through Librarian’s resource, DEMCO)

Writing to Prompts in the Trait-Based Classroom: Content Areas

Writing lessons and planning that go along with the writing classes I attend ( 5 hours)

3.

Planning and delivering writing mini-lessons and student conferences based on new learning from readings and conferences (15 x 45 minute periods = 11+ hours)

Reflection Activities:

Read and reflect on 6+1 Traits of Writing by Ruth Culham

2.

Reflection writing on the 6 trait” conference ( 1 hour)

3.

Weekly reflections on “Habits of Highly Effective Writing Teachers" workshops (6 x 20 min. each = 2 hours)

4.

Receive feedback from colleagues on “6 traits to go” lessons, and modify as needed ( 1 hour)

5.

Summary reflection on personal learning and impact on student learning ( 1 1/2 hours)
