Hurricane Rita. Rita, one of the deadliest storms ever
recorded, sent millions fleeing, threatened vital oil
production and cast fear far and wide as it ripped across
the Gulf of Mexico, whipping up winds of 170 miles an
hour (275 kilometres).
Hurricane Rita continues its track on
the Gulf of Mexico towards Texas,
United States. Rita, one of the
deadliest storms ever recorded, sent

Wednesday marked the first day resident evacuees
could return to Florida Keys after Hurricane Rita
lashed the Keys Tuesday but did little damage to the
vulnerable Florida Islands. Hurricane Rita grew into
a potentially catastrophic Category 5 storm on
Wednesday and took aim at Texas as officials
began evacuating more than a million people from
most of the coast and parts of Houston
