SPOKEN PARTS:
VO: Although the concept of recycling has
been prevalent in the United States since the
1970, only recently has the public grasped the
importance of being environmentally friendly.
In 2002, former vice-president Al Gore began
voicing his concern about the climate crisis
plaguing planet earth. Since then many
businesses, organizations, and towns have
taken action to preserve the natural
environment.
The Township of West Windsor is supporting
the “going green” movement taking place
across the globe. Efforts to recycle and reduce
energy consumption are evident from the
community level to the student level. Recently,
the Township was successful in its attempt to
install a diesel exhaust system for the West
Windsor Firehouse which will limit the amount
of toxins released into the air. The action
informed citizens in the town about the
importance of stopping pollution.

VO: In 2006, a group of students from West
Windsor Plainsboro High School South were
inspired and approached their principal Charles
Rudnick with an idea to recycle paper and
bottles in the school.
SOT: (RUDNICK): “What I liked about these
guys was that they were enthusiastic and had a
lot of kids that were interested. And they
worked through the problems which were
managing to get all the papers in the
classrooms to the recycling bin. “

accomplish. Recycling club president Harsh
Sinha (SINN-hah) says there are many ways to
meet the objectives.

SOT: (Sinha): “You know how everyday we
use Styrofoam plates for lunch? And we use so
many. We throw them out with the food. Just
imagine if there was another bin just for that.
Plus we decided to recycle ink cartridges. And
companies actually pay”

progress reports. We have actually acquired a
new software package that can allow us to do
that.”

VO: The West Windsor Plainsboro School
District is also taking a step to save the
environment. In the past year, millions of light
bulbs throughout the schools were switched to
low wattage energy saving light.
In addition, the district is also hoping to
become paperless.
VO: The idea of going green is even going to
affect the building of the new classrooms at
West Windsor Plainsboro High School South.

SOT: (RUDNICK): “We have got the
appropriate energy saving glass in the
windows and light fixtures are again going to
have the light bulbs that are environmentally
friendly. That was a conscious thing that we
did when we proposed the referendum.”
STAND UP: All around the community,
individuals are taking pride in helping the
environment. Some have installed solar panels
on their roofs while others are offering
community service hours to pick up litter.
Whether or not the actions taken are big or
small, the effort each person gives is what is
crucial to preserving the planet. And it will
take combined awareness, effort and
enthusiasm from students, parents, other
residents and public officials if West Windsor
is ever going to be truly green.
