The Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 Description of event 71 Delegates met in Wilmington when the colonial government refused to call a meeting. They elected representatives to the Continental Congress A group of NC women burned their British tea and issued a protest about British policies. Citizens of Mecklenburg County met in Charlotte and decided that all British offices were vacant and could only be filled by the Provincial Congress. Declared independence The 4th Provincial Congress declared NC’s independence from Great Britain. The first colony to do so. William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and John Penn signed the DOI as representatives of the NC delegation. How did NC help shape the Constitution? We sent Delegates Richard Dobbs Spaight, William Blount, and Hugh Williamson to the Convention. NC opposed the Constitution at the Hillsborough Convention in 1788 because it did not contain a BOR. We Congress passed the BOR, NC ratified the Constitution at the Fayetteville Convention in 1789.
