SUMMARY: Provides each enrolled student of secondary school age an
opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that will foster physical
skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the
pleasures of sport and the principles of fair play.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
 Organizes and administers the overall program of extracurricular athletics, both intramural and
interscholastic for the school.
 Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff
members.
 Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the
athletic program.
 Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.
 Hires officials, team physicians, and policemen as required and assumes general responsibility for
the proper supervision of home games.
 Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants.
 Arranges provision for meals for athletes and coaches when opponent is 50 miles or more from a
district boundary line.
 Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of
athletic activities.
 Establishes the physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport, and
verifies each athlete's eligibility.
 Prepares and administers the athletic program.
 Requisitions supplies, uniforms and equipment for athletic programs in cooperation with appropriate
staff members.
 Supervises the cleaning, storage, and care of all athletic equipment.
 Supervises all ticket sales and fund-raising events connected with the athletic program, and assumes
responsibility for proper handling and accounting of monies involved.
 Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs including lodging, meals, towels, gymnasium services,
and field assistance, as appropriate.
 Makes all necessary arrangements for the use of non-school playing fields and facilities.
 Arranges the practice schedules for the coaches on the fields and in the gymnasiums.
 Provides for the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season.
 Administers the insurance program covering school athletes, and assumes responsibility for all
processing of reports and claims.
 Directs an in-school, extracurricular program designed to foster support for the athletic teams and
school spirit among nonparticipants.
 Plans and supervises an annual recognition program for school athletes.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises assistant coaches in the Athletic Department. Is responsible for the overall
direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory
responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning,
assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining
employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Valid teacher certification, Masters Degree with courses in the organization and
administration of athletic and physical education programs and at least five years
successful experience as a head coach. Must be able to effectively deal with the public
and staff both in person and on the phone.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports,
and legal documents. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication in a variety
of formats and styles. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top
management, public groups/community and Board of Education.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference,
and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the
school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in
writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the
Board of Education policies.

repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee must occasionally lift and/or
move 75+ pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear
conversations in a quiet or loud environment. The employee continuously communicates through speech.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of
