Annexation of unicorporated areas surrounding Tucson will bring much needed state shared revenue, which is calculated based on population within the jurisdictions. This revenue can provide much-needed funds for road transportation, parks and our community’s public safety. With more than 300,000 people living outside the Tucson city limits, it is estimated that Tucson loses about $70 million each year. The Tucson Hispanic Chamber supports the grassroots initiative that has been led by our Mayor and Council to work with individual neighborhoods in convincing families of the benefits of becoming part of the City of Tucson. Participation in the City elections is an added benefit to the savings they may also receive in utilizing Tucson Fire, Trash and Recycling. Businesses in unicorporated areas face a more challenging decision in weighing annexation. Businesses who choose to become part of the City of Tucson will be required to pay a Business Privelege tax, an Occupational License Tax, a Lease Tax/Commercial Rental sales tax and sign fees. Our Chamber will work with Chamber member businesses to answer their questions and identify the pros/cons to their business. The value of having a voice in Tucson’s utilities and services may outweigh the challenges. In addition, the funds available to the City with an increased population will provide economic benefit to the business community in better road maintenance, which is a high priority due the substandard state of the roads in our region. Speedway Tucson, AZ 85719 520.620.0005 Fax 520.844.7071 www.tucsonhispanicchamber.org The Tucson Hispanic Chamber commits to work with the Annexation Manager to assist in outreach to unincorporated areas contiguous to the City of Tucson. In addition, we will assist in the public relations efforts (in English and Spanish) to promote the benefits of annexation to residents and businesses in nearby areas. We understand that some new residents will see a financial savings in being annexed into the City while others will not. However, this is the right decision for our community and a benefit for the greater good of our region.
