THE ST PETER’S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER & NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SEPTEMBER 2011 Dear Member Members of the Committee are once again taking part in the Big Clean. Any members willing to volunteer would be most welcome. Please contact Hilary McKernan if you can help. Chairman of the Canterbury City Partnership, Bob Jones, said: “I’d like to ask businesses and residents when they last stood outside the front of their building and had a good look round. Could the pavement do with a scrub? Is there any litter? Can you see a few little jobs that need doing to improve the look of the place? The project is being supported by Canterbury City Council, Kent Police and the council’s environment contractor Serco in order to make the maximum impact. The timing of the ‘Canterbury Big Clean’ has been deliberately planned to coincide with the Canterbury Festival, which runs from 16 to 30 October. We are inviting community groups and voluntary organisations to take part on Saturday, 8 October, while Wednesday, 12 October will be the turn of the business community. The last Big Clean was a huge success due to the hard work of all the many groups involved. Businesses, voluntary organisations and community groups from across the city centre came together to clear rubbish, scrub subways, wash paintwork and remove graffiti. We hope that even more people will take part this time and spare an hour or so to make the city look its best before the start of the Canterbury Festival. Philippe Esclasse, City Centre Manager, on 01227 787921, email philippe.esclasse@canterbury.gov.uk FOUR TEENAGERS ARRESTED FOR METAL THEFT Four 13-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of metal theft as part of a summer crackdown by Kent Police. The four boys, all from the Herne Bay area, were arrested in Underdown Road, Herne Bay, at 8pm yesterday, Wednesday 31 August, following reports from a member of the public that lead was being stripped from the roof of a nearby building. They have been released on police bail until 17 September while enquiries continue. The arrests came as this year's Stay Safe campaign draws to a close. The campaign, which focused on the type of crime that frequently occurs during the holiday season, ended on Friday 2 September. Acting Chief Inspector Terry Chuter said: "Lead tiles and fixings and cabling can be rich pickings for thieves, but people can take steps to reduce the risk. "Avoid leaving tools or equipment around your property that could be used to climb onto your roof or remove valuable items. Security marking metal items with a forensic solution can also help identify property if it is stolen. "We are determined to fight metal theft and ask the public to continue to help by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity straight away." Criminal Damage CRIMINAL DAMAGE. KENT TRADING STANDARDS. Banking scam involving ID fraud. A local resident has discovered that a Halifax bank account had been set up in her name without her knowledge. Criminals had used bank account details to set up five mobile phone accounts. She later found out her neighbour had been similarly targeted. During a conversation with her neighbour, she was told that they had received a letter from the Halifax but ignored it because they did not have a Halifax account. The woman encouraged her neighbour to investigate and they found that they too had an account opened in their name and various credit contracts set up. Kent Trading Standards is warning people to check carefully any correspondence they receive from banks, building societies or other service providers. Do not ignore letters on the basis that you d! o not have an account with them. If you believe that you have been a victim of ID theft you should report the matter to the relevant bank or building society so that they can investigate the matter and involve the police if necessary.
