Peer Tutoring Program
FOR TUTORS
Juniata offers a popular, campus-wide program of peer tutoring. Peer tutoring is available in any offered
course to each Juniata College student who desires additional help with subject material. Before requesting
tutoring assistance for a course, students must discuss their academic performance with the course instructor
and ask for his or her verbal permission; many faculty would prefer to work with a student during office
hours before tutoring begins. In select courses, tutoring is offered in the form of group review sessions, and
there are also small group tutoring opportunities in which two or more students work with a peer tutor.

A reasonable amount of tutoring is available at no charge to the student, but the number of hours of
tutoring per week may not exceed the amount of time spent in lecture each week (three to four
hours/week would be the maximum).

Students/tutees understand that tutoring is a supplement to class preparation, class attendance, and
office-hours assistance from faculty--it is not intended to replace any of these critical academic
responsibilities. Students who are motivated to get the most out of tutoring find that the program is very
successful for them.

Follow-Up Reports must be turned in within two days of a tutoring session to the Office of Academic
Support Services.
Qualifications: All tutors must be in good academic standing and recommended by a faculty member as an individual who has
demonstrated expertise in the academic discipline and relates well to peers. Prospective tutors must complete a written
application. An interview is required.
Training: Tutors are required to participate in one tutor training session per semester.
Further Training: The 1-credit course, Peer Tutor Training (EN 145) is now available fall and spring. Taking the course is
entirely optional, but does offer effective tutoring strategies and strengthens communications skills. Look into it.
Record-keeping: Tutors are expected to complete a follow-up report after each tutoring session and to submit this report to the
Office of Academic Support Services within two days of the session. We forward a copy of the report to the professor. For
every hour reported on your timesheet, either with tutoring hours or hours spent in preparation, you must submit a
tutoring follow-up report. Our tutoring budget is very modest; every single Follow-up Report is scrutinized.
Reimbursement: Tutors receive the current student assistant rate for time spent meeting with students and preparing for those
meetings. Time sheets are located in Academic Support Services, and tutoring hours must be reported prior to the end of each
month. When completing your timesheet, please separate your preparation hours from tutoring hours, and also indicate the
tutee’s initials if it is an individual session. (Please see the sample timesheet in the office, or ask for assistance if necessary.)
Failure to sign time sheets will result in no payment for tutoring hours for that month.
Expectations: Tutors are expected to behave in a professional fashion and to maintain a high degree of integrity at all times.
Tutors are expected to conduct meetings in a manner that facilitates active learning and to communicate any difficulties to the
tutoring coordinator immediately. They are expected to arrive punctually to pre-arranged meetings and to give adequate notice
when a meeting must be canceled.

Tutoring must not occur until the Tutee has completed the appropriate paperwork with the Office of Academic
Support Services. Tutees must speak to their professor prior to requesting a tutor. This office makes all final
tutor/tutee assignments. You will not be compensated for tutoring a student who has not completed the proper
paperwork.
Evaluations: Periodic evaluations may be required. Usually these evaluations will include a self-evaluation as well as a brief
evaluation from the tutee.

Peer Tutoring Program
FOR TUTEES
Juniata offers a popular, campus-wide program of peer tutoring. Peer tutoring is available in any
offered course to each Juniata College student who desires additional help with subject material.
Before requesting tutoring assistance for a course, students must discuss their academic performance
with the course instructor and ask for his or her verbal permission; many faculty would prefer to
work with a student during office hours before tutoring begins. In select courses, tutoring is offered
in the form of group review sessions, and there are also small group tutoring opportunities in which
two or more students work with a peer tutor.
A reasonable amount of tutoring is available at no charge to the student, but the number of hours of
tutoring per week may not exceed the amount of time spent in lecture each week (three to four
hours/week would be the maximum).
Students/tutees understand that tutoring is a supplement to class preparation, class attendance, and
office-hours assistance from faculty--it is not intended to replace any of these critical academic
responsibilities. Students who are motivated to get the most out of tutoring find that the program is
very successful for them.
Tutees may request a specific tutor if they wish and that request will be granted if possible.
Qualifications: Peer tutoring is available to each Juniata College student who desires additional help with subject
material in a course in which that student experiences academic difficulty. In most cases, individualized assistance
is available. In select courses, tutoring is available in the form of group review sessions. Before requesting
individual tutoring assistance for a course, students must discuss their academic performance with the course
instructor. Where peer tutoring is not deemed appropriate by the tutoring coordinator, course instructor and, in
some cases the ESL coordinator, alternative forms of assistance will be recommended to the student.
Rights: Tutees are entitled to work regularly with a tutor who knows the subject and facilitates active learning.
Also, tutees are entitled to receive advance notice when a tutoring session must be canceled and prompt rescheduling
in those cases.
Responsibilities: Tutees are expected to arrive at prearranged meetings appropriately prepared. Tutees are to give
adequate notice to their tutor when they are unable to make an appointment. A tutee who fails to show up for
prearranged meetings more than two times is contacted and may have his or her tutoring privileges revoked.
Students who receive tutoring in Math or Computer Science can appreciate that their tutors are permitted to guide
learning and offer practice, but cannot – cannot – provide answers to problems or programs. Such would represent a
violation of the College’s academic integrity policy.
If you decide to drop the class in which you are being tutored, you must contact our office in 208 Founders, or
x3160. The time of our tutors is very valuable and if you no longer require their assistance, there are other
students who could use their help.
Evaluations: Evaluations will be given to you at the end of the semester to provide us with information regarding
your tutor and the tutoring program.
