Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Science Center Coordinator/Success Skills Coordinator works in cooperation with faculty, peer tutors, and volunteers to provide
an environment which assists students in developing science success and independence. This position will also provide academic
support services, workshops, and individual and small group consultative services designed to assist students with developing and
implementing tools to succeed academically at SCTCC.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate or higher degree in biology, chemistry, or related
AND
1 academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in sciences at the high school level or above
OR
An equivalent combination of education and work experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field from an accredited institution
Two years of experience working in a comprehensive 2-year college
Experience teaching/tutoring biology or chemistry
Successful science work experience
Excellent presentation, communication, and facilitation skills
Ability to lead small-group training sessions
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
Strong working knowledge of Desire2Learn (D2L)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent human relations skills
Successful work experience with diverse students
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:








Coordinate the daily operations and services of the Science Center
Develop, coordinate, and conduct science related programming such as review sessions, facilitated study groups, online
tutoring, workshops/seminars, etc.
Create and maintain tutoring resource materials that support learning objectives
Initiate and facilitate cooperative services with academic departments; acts as a liaison to the science faculty and science
tutors, bridging curriculum and tutoring services
Supervise student employees, volunteers, and student use of the center in conjunction with the Director
Mentor and advise student tutors with respect to appropriate student management, subject matter, study skills, and
appreciation of student needs
Connect students to academic resources on campus including tutoring, advising, library, etc.
Work with students individually or in small groups to assist in developing their science success and independence





Work collaboratively with the academic advising center and other student support services to coordinate and deliver
resources and opportunities for students
Provide high quality academic support services to students, including education regarding time management and
organizational skills, study skills, and assistance with task analysis.
Assist students with establishing schedules for completion of academic work, and balancing academic
responsibilities/requirements with extracurricular activities. Meet with students to follow-up and track progress
Be available for drop in and scheduled meetings with students
Develop and run workshops and small group activities on issues of academic success.
