Course Description: Students will learn various metalsmithing techniques such as silver
soldering, inlay, basic construction and fabrication of sheet metals (copper, brass, silver)
through making rings, brooches and bracelets. Students will be encouraged to create
and design their own jewelry with both meaning and function. Historical and
contemporary issues surrounding jewelry and body adornment will be presented and
discussed during the course. Students will learn various methods of ring making,
including casting and stone setting.
Course Objectives:

 Introduce tools and techniques in small metal fabrication.
 Develop visualization and aesthetic awareness & skills.
 Heighten the awareness of wearing jewelry as a communicative art form.
 Familiarize students with current issues of the metalsmithing field.
 Present techniques for soldering a decorative wire ring;
o Sweat-solder interior silver band
o Butt-solder laminated band
o Add decorative elements
 Familiarize students with history of jewelry and metals.
Student Learning Outcomes:
 Successful students will be expected to develop their awareness of the physical
world.
 Successful students will develop their experience of making wearable jewelry.
 Successful students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of techniques for
soldering a decorative wire ring such as sweat-solder interior silver band and buttsolder laminated band.
 Successful students will be expected to demonstrate techniques for adding
decorative elements.
 Successful students will be expected to demonstrate recognition of tools, materials,
and processes.
 Successful students will learn various soldering techniques.
 Successful students will learn coloration and surface texture techniques.

jewelry and metalsmithing books for student use. “The
Complete Metalsmith” by McCreight is recommended text.

2. History of jewelry & metals.
3. Soldering pierced pieces to other shapes.
4. Use of jeweler’s saw.
5. Foundry process.
6. Lost wax casting.
7. Basic waxwork on model to be cast.
8. Investment, burnout and centrifugal casting.
9. Metal replacement techniques.
