In this NERU presentation, discussion about the changes that occurred in the Health, Science
and Society course in the fall of 2009. The following aspects were discussed:
New Math in the SON: Sample, 40 X 10 = 931
The Process: dissolving 40 faculty-facilitated small groups of Level 3 students, approximately
10 students per group, into 4 large classes, 4 streams, 3 sites and 2 levels with 931students in
total.
Objective:
 Upstream social determinants of health – not downstream
 Process entailed seminar performance, short paper and a final paper
The Challenges:
 integrating the pbl small group process into the large classes,
 new texts,
 noise levels,

ELM – student could not find information
not knowing the students,
new units each week,
volume of emails.
Administrating quizzes
The Rewards:
 excellent student presentations,
 superb student Reflections,
 students helped themselves and were more mature and respectful at end of the course
 exceptional scores on the registrar administered exam, and no appeals!
