2016 COURSES
ICAPP specialises in facilitating the professional development of psychologists, psychiatrists, social
workers, counsellors, welfare workers, teachers, nurses, occupational therapists and others who wish to
develop their capacity to work more effectively with children, adolescents and families.
In 2016, we are offering 6-Month and 1-Year courses that can be taken as individual units or as a full
1-Year Certificate Course.
1. Certificate Course in Psychoanalytic Work with Children, Adolescents and Families
This is a 1-Year course comprising 3 Seminars:
• Infant Observation (Full Year)
• Personality Development – A Psychoanalytic Approach (Semester 1)
• Overview of Psychoanalytic Theory (Semester 2)
The Certificate Course is a stand-alone course that provides students with the observational and thinking
skills to work with greater conceptual understanding and emotional depth. The Certificate Course is also
the main pathway for those who are interested in applying to enrol in ICAPP’s 3-Year Child and
Adolescent Psychotherapy Training programme (next intake 2017).
Please see descriptions below for further details about the seminars.
2. Infant Observation
This course can be taken as a stand-alone course. It is a 1-Year course designed to help anyone
working in any capacity with children, adolescents and their families. It is also the core course for those
who are interested in becoming psychotherapists.
Infant Observation is an intense experience in which the student learns directly about very young states
of mind. Students are required to present detailed written descriptions of weekly observations of an
infant at home interacting with their caretaker. These observations are then discussed in a small group
with an experienced seminar leader.
The aim is to develop skills in detailed observation, disciplined describing, learning how to establish
observer boundaries, exploring the conscious and unconscious meanings of behaviour, and thinking
about the growth of the mind and personality. To integrate and complete the course, students submit a
5000-word paper at the completion of the observation.
3. Personality Development – A Psychoanalytic Approach
This is a 6-Month Reading Seminar being held in Semester 1, 2016. It can be taken as a stand-alone
course or as part of the Certificate Course. The Seminar is unique to ICAPP and gives an account of
human development across the lifespan. It will study growth of the personality throughout life, paying
attention to mental processes such as projection and introjection and their interaction within family life
and experience in the external world.
Weekly readings are discussed in classes led by an experienced seminar leader. The seminar is suitable
for those unfamiliar with psychoanalytic ideas as well as for those who wish to enhance their
understanding of the workings of mental processes throughout life.
For Certificate Course students, completion of this seminar requires a 1500-word essay to be
submitted and passed. Students who are enrolled independently are encouraged to do the essay as
it helps to integrate learning, but it is not compulsory.
4. Overview of Psychoanalytic Theory
This is a 6-Month Reading Seminar being held in Semester 2, 2016. It can be taken as a stand-alone
course or as part of the Certificate Course.
The Seminar gives an overview of psychoanalytic theory from Freud, Klein, Winnicott and Bion to current
theorists. Weekly readings and class discussions are designed to help students become familiar with the
ideas and the thinking of these theorists.
Certificate Course students are required to submit and pass a 1500-word essay to complete the seminar.
Students who are enrolled independently are encouraged to do the essay as it helps to integrate
learning, but it is not compulsory.
