*** Leadership Course Rubric is a “soft” opening for the semester of Spring 2010.
Learning outcomes and verification from the following rubric will be used when
determining a course’s approval for academic activity area, but guidelines from previous
semesters will be considered. Rubrics will become permanent Fall of 2010. Any questions
may be sent to leadership@odos.wisc.edu. ***
Rubric for Leadership Course
Leadership Certificate
Leadership- the ability to mobilize the self and others toward a common goal; an action, not a
position; mobilization that creates an impact on individuals, student organizations, and the
community in a positive, permanent way. (Leadership Certificate Packet, 2010. www.cfli.wisc.edu).
The following learning outcomes distinguish core components of what the Leadership Certificate
deems an appropriate exploration of “leadership.”
Course’s learning outcomes must demonstrate:
 Academic rigor that includes leadership content mastery as well as critical leadership
thinking skills demonstrated through the course leadership learning objectives and course
content at a level of quality and complexity to stimulate critical thinking skills.
 Research and examination of historical and/or contemporary leadership theory (i.e., the
Social Change Model, Tuckman Theory, Abraham Maslow, etc.)
 Intentional leadership learning: defined as examining the self in regards to individual
leadership, group leadership, and community leadership
Clear Verification points for Academic Course Activity Area:
 Readings, assignments, projects, and speakers where the focus of learning is based on
leadership
 Submit a transcript that indicates you received a 3.0 or better in the course
 Syllabus included that confirms ‘leadership’ as critical learning outcomes in the course
 500 word summary of what was learned and how relates to one of three content areas
Note: This does not include academic courses where grading is based on participation in a
leadership role. Examples that do not meet the leadership course requirements are leading
discussions, teaching a class, providing service in the community, internships, participation
in structured groups, class projects, etc. These skill based classroom activities might fit the
“leadership role” activity area.
The following courses fit the leadership course learning outcomes for the Leadership Certificate.
If you feel that a class you are taking fits the learning outcomes above and is not included in the
list below, send your syllabus and professor contact information (name, e-mail, phone, and
academic department) to leadership@odos.wisc.edu. If you would like to use a class from
another institution, it must appear on your UW-Madison official transcript.
While these courses fit the learning outcomes for the Leadership Certificate academic activity
area, acceptance of your submission depends heavily upon your summaries and reflections of
1
your experience with the course. You may need to edit your submissions before they can be
accepted by the Leadership Certificate reviewing committee.
