Dear Parents and Students:
The Physical Education Department welcomes you to William Wirt Middle School. We would like
to take this opportunity to provided both students and parents with an understanding of the
department’s goals and established rules for the 2012-2013 school year.
The primary focus of our program is the development of the body through planned activities that
increase strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. In addition to the physical aspects of the
program, we strive to develop the qualities of leadership and sportsmanship, as well as demonstrate
the values of cooperation and consideration of others.
Specifically, our program allows students to choose from units which include: Team sports,
individual sports, rhythmic/fitness activities, tumbling and gymnastics.
In the interest of safety, uniformity, and good health habits, we ask your assistance in helping your
child comply with the following rules:
1. Students are required to provide and wear the school approved Physical Education Uniform.
This uniform consists of a reversible William Wirt Gym Shirt and William Wirt Black
Shorts. The cost of the uniform is $25.00. The gym shirt is $12.50 and the gym shorts are
$12.50. To complete the uniform students should wear socks and athletic shoes.
2. Students are responsible for their own personal comfort “it’s to cold” is not an acceptable
excuse for not dressing. If your child is cold natured warm-up suits, sweats, and light weight
jackets may be worn in addition to the P.E. uniform. School clothes may not be worn as a
part of the uniform.
3. Locks are provided to students by the school for use in the locker rooms.
4. Students should secure all valuables and personal belongings in their locker. No student
should share their lock combination with others. We suggest that personal items such as
large amounts of money, electronic devices, expensive jewelry and sports equipment be left
at home.
5. For safety reasons jewelry should not be worn in Physical Education class.
6. Prepared for class or not, students must stay with their unit teacher. Leaving the area of
instruction with out permission is considered a cut.
7. Students will not be allowed to use the restroom once they leave the locker room. All
personal needs should be taken care of during the dress and preparation time prior to
reporting to the gym.
8. In the event a student’s health prevents them from participating in class, a note from the
parent is required. The student is asked to dress for class but will be excused from activity.
A Doctor’s note is necessary for any condition excluding a student from activity for more
than three consecutive days. A parental home and work phone number should accompany all
notes. Should a long term disability occur written assignments will be given and counted
toward the final grade.
9. Students are expected to practice good personal hygiene. Please provide your child with
lotion and a good deodorant. (no glass containers)
10. Physical Education uniforms should be laundered on a regular basis.
