Teachers provide engaging activities for the pupils which help to motivate the pupils
to succeed. High quality learning resources are used to promote this.
Teachers foster an atmosphere where learners are able to apply Mathematics to solve
problems in real life situations.
Pupils are able to become independent learners, finding their own methods to reach a
solution to a problem.
There are consistently high levels of achievement shown by all groups of pupils,
irrespective of background. This comes from challenging and supporting them in their
learning as appropriate and monitoring their progress and intervening if necessary.
Everyone knows their strengths and weaknesses and are able to use this knowledge in
order to improve.
Standards are high in all areas- Teaching and learning, leadership and management
and the curriculum. This leads to high standards of pupil attainment and progress.
The average class size in years 7 to 11 is 21.
Last year around a third of our year 11 girls achieved an A* or A, with over half the year
group getting a B or better, with 79% achieving a C or better. As a result we often have over
170 students studying A/S and A2 level Mathematics (Edexcel syllabus). We also offer AS
and A2 Further Mathematics. Usually over half of A-level girls achieve an A or B grade at A2
with around a third gaining an A. As a result of our success at KS5, increasing numbers of our
girls are progressing to study mathematical subjects at university. We now enter up to 120 of
our most able girls for Statistics GCSE in year 10, as an additional qualification.
In 2014 our GCSE results placed us third in the borough for Mathematics, out of 13 high
schools.
At present the department comprises of 15 teachers and a teaching assistant. The department
is suited in a group of classrooms on two floors of the main teaching block. Each classroom in
the suite has a Smart Board and the Maths department as a team is working to produce
resources that can be used in school and within the borough network of schools.
As a Science and Maths College, the department fully embraces all the challenges that this
involves. We have strong community links with Primary and Secondary schools within the
Borough. The department runs numerous activities and clubs and holds a games evening for
Year 7 pupils and parents each year. We successfully participate in the UK Maths Challenge
at junior, intermediate and senior level. We also hold G&T enrichment weekends jointly with
a partner school.
