Guidelines for Teaching Artists
The Scrap Exchange offers two sessions of artist-led classes each year, a Fall/Winter session and
a Spring/Summer session. These classes are selected and scheduled by the Outreach
Coordinator and are designed to offer community members the chance to learn skills and
techniques to create usable functional or decorative items from reclaimed materials. Classes are
led by local artists and artisans interested in sharing their skills, knowledge, and experience.
Classes should be built around the use of reused or reclaimed materials, ideally materials that
can be found at The Scrap Exchange.
Location: Unless otherwise arranged, all classes are held in the Make-and-Take room at The
Scrap Exchange Creative Reuse Center at 923 Franklin Street, Durham (east end of downtown,
across from Golden Belt). This room includes electrical outlets, work tables, chairs, and basic
tools and supplies (e.g., tape, staplers, scissors).
Materials: Instructors have access to Scrap Exchange materials for use by class participants.
Please discuss with the Outreach Coordinator your plan for incorporating Scrap Exchange
materials into your class, including approximate number of participants, likely volume of
materials needed, and any materials charges associated with the class. Please note that items
from the Fancy Pants (vintage) section of the store, the Artist’s Marketplace, and the Gallery
may not be used by program participants in a class unless purchased separately.
Instructors should make arrangements with the Outreach Coordinator to create a backstock of
materials needed for their class. These materials will be saved and given to the instructor at the
time of the class. If participants need access to materials on the retail floor during the class,
arrangements should be made in advance with the Outreach Coordinator.
All materials reserved for a class remain the property of The Scrap Exchange until used in the
class, and all unused materials must be returned to The Scrap Exchange at the conclusion of the
class.
All materials and tools required from sources outside of The Scrap Exchange are the
responsibility of the instructor. Costs for these materials may be included in the cost of the class,
or a separate materials fee may be added. Materials fees must be determined in advance and
included in all promotional announcements. Instructors are responsible for collecting all
materials fees from participants at the time of the class.
All support documents to be used during a class are the responsibility of the instructor.
Staff Liaison: All classes will be supervised by a Scrap Exchange staff person who will remain
on site throughout the program. This staff person serves as liaison for the instructor and
supervisor for The Scrap Exchange. The staff person will be responsible for opening and closing
the store before and after the class, ringing up participants for their registration fees and any
supplies they purchase, making sure that the instructor has access to needed materials, making
sure participants have access to the site, and generally making sure that the facility is used in an
appropriate manner and that everything goes smoothly. Staff filling this role will be allowed to
participate in the class (as their duties permit) free of charge.
Fees and Payment: Instructors are responsible for determining the cost of their class; class
fees are split equally between the instructor (50%) and The Scrap Exchange (50%).
Class fees will be collected by The Scrap Exchange at the beginning of the first meeting of a class.
Materials fees are the responsibility of the instructor. Class fees will be rung into the register and
a check will be issued to the instructor for 50% of the fees collected within two weeks of the
conclusion of the class.
Cancellation Policy: If the minimum number of participants has not registered for a class one
week before the start of the class, the instructor may choose to cancel the class. If a class is
cancelled, the Outreach Coordinator will contact all participants and inform them of the
cancellation.
Alternatively, the instructor may allow more time for additional participants to enroll. If the
instructor chooses not to cancel the class, a specific date and time for cancellation due to lack of
enrollment must be determined. Students who have already registered when this decision is
made will be notified that the class may be cancelled due to low enrollment, and will be told the
date and time a decision is to be made about whether or not the class will be held.
The artist also has the option of offering the class to the students who have signed up even
though the minimum enrolment has not been met. In this case, the same guidelines for a fully
enrolled class will be followed.
Any reason for cancellation other than low enrollment is considered an emergency cancellation
and should be communicated to the Outreach Coordinator as soon as possible.
Marketing: The Scrap Exchange will create flyers, brochures, and/or posters to be placed in
the store and on community bulletin boards in the Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill areas. This
may include promotions for multiple classes together on a single flyer/brochure.
Classes will be listed in our monthly newsletter and in online listings on craigslist and Facebook,
and may be listed through other media sources such as blogs, listservs and print media.
Instructors are encouraged to promote their classes amongst their friends and personal
networks. Instructors are also invited to create posters and promotional materials for their
individual classes. These materials can be posted in our store as well as throughout the
community.
