FALL 2010 COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES
1. CHINA PAINTING
Course Description: Learn the art of porcelain painting by an instructor who has taught across
the country for thirty-five years. Each student will learn to paint a china “gift-wrapped” box
with flowers and ribbons. The china is fired between each session and upon completion of
painting. All china pieces, supplies and firing time are supplied by the instructor.

2. OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING
Course Description: Experience the excitement of learning to paint in your choice of oils or
acrylics. Learn to compose paintings with depth by the use of warm and cool colors. Learn to
use mediums to create glazes and textures. Explore mixing versatile neutral colors to create
dramatic shadows. Learn brush techniques to bring your painting to life. Individualized
instruction will be provided to assist students in completing successful paintings. Painting
supplies are provided by students. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

3. WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Course Description: Learn techniques to paint wonderful watercolors. Learn color mixing,
flowing wet-in-wet colors, painting color washes and creating special effects. Learn methods to
compose and design a successful painting. There will be a demonstration every class.
Individualized instruction will be a part of every class. Painting supplies are provided by
students. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

4. INTRODUCTORY WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Composing a Picture Focusing on Values and Light Effects
Course Description: Beginning watercolorists will learn a variety of watercolor techniques
while emphasizing value and light effects in composition. The subject matter will be Wisconsin
landscapes and flowers. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

5. DRAWING – A Basic Course
Course Description: Beginning or intermediate drawing students will learn basic concepts in
line and gesture drawing. The first 3 lessons will emphasize tonal drawing with pencil. In the
last two lessons, students will have the option of adding color by using soft pastels. Supplies
needed include: Drawing paper or sketch pad, a 11 x 14 Pencil Drawing Sketch Pad would be
ideal (Cansen or Strathmore are good brands), several #2 or #3 pencils, a pencil sharpener, a soft
eraser, a set of soft pastels, and pastel drawing paper.

6. BEGINNING MACHINE QUILTING
Course Description: You’ve put a lot of time and effort into piecing that top, now learn how to
do some basic quilting that will really help to show off your piecing skills and enhance the look
of your quilt. This course will teach you beginning skills with a walking foot and a free motion
foot. You will learn basic designs with both methods that will enable you to finish off your tops
without spending money to have someone else quilt them. You must be able to lower the feed
dogs on your machine or cover them for the free motion part of the class.

7. BASIC BLOCK QUILT
Course Description: Basic quilting skills will be covered in the Basic Block Quilt. This project
will take the beginner quilter through the complete process of making a crib size quilt. The
techniques covered will include rotary cutting, ¼” seam allowance, pressing, borders,
sandwiching and pin basting, machine quilting, and binding application and hand stitching. This
quilt can easily be converted to a much larger size by adding rows of blocks or by increasing the
size of the blocks. Additional fabric would be needed to enlarge the quilt. (A material list will be
sent upon registration)

8. YOU HAD ME AT CHOCOLATE
Course Description: The holiday season is right around the corner. Unsure of what to bring as
a dessert? Let Dove Discoveries help you with entertaining. Registrants will learn more about
chocolate, sample Dove chocolates, and prepare their own desserts. Products will also be
available for purchase.

9. NOT YOUR MOTHER’S SUGAR COOKIES – HALLOWEEN SHAPES
Cookie Decorating Class – Rolled Fondant, Royal Icing and much more…
Course Description: Learn to decorate fun and festive new Halloween shape cut-out cookies
like the pros. Scare up some sweet and spooky Halloween treats for the ghosts and goblins in
your life. Creations from simple to stunning. All supplies included: Pre-baked cookies, Royal
Icing, Fondant, Recipes and all the sprinkles and embellishments imaginable. You will take
home at least six large size decorated Halloween cookies (please bring a container to transport
them home). Please join me for an evening of fun and cookie creativity (Ages 14 and up –
children must be accompanied by an Adult).

10. GINGERBREAD OR SUGAR COOKIE HOUSE CLASS
Bake, Assemble and Decorate a Gingerbread or Sugar Cookie House
Course Description: Learn to bake, assemble and decorate a fun and festive Sugar Cookie or
Gingerbread House like the pros. Come and create a sweet and whimsical treat for the favorite
elves in your life. On the first night of class you will need to bring a batch of prepared raw
cookie dough from a recipe that is supplied by the instructor, rolling pin rings, and a base and
box for transport. The first evening of class you will cut out, rubber stamp, bake and assemble
your creation. The second evening you will start to decorate and embellish your creation. The
final night of class you will complete and take home your creation. All skill levels welcome.
(Ages 14 and up – children must be accompanied by an Adult).

class will focus on decorating cookies with rolled fondant using piecing techniques. We will
embellish and detail with Royal Icing. All supplies included: Pre-baked cookies, Royal Icing,
Fondant, Recipes and all the sprinkles and embellishments imaginable. Please join me for an
evening of fun and cookie creativity (please bring a container to transport cookies home). All

12. CHOCOLATE IS A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND
Truffles, Individual Chocolate Dessert Cups, Chocolate Embellishments and Chocolate
Leaves
Course Description: Did you ever think you could make a Chocolate Dessert Cup using a
balloon? Well you can and I’ll show you how you can use it to serve a fabulous dessert. Learn
to make Chocolate Truffles and how to make chocolate leaves to turn into a Christmas Poinsettia
to use to decorate a cookie, cupcake or cake. Chocolate Shot Glasses anyone??? All supplies
included (you’ll need a container to bring your creations home). Please join me for an evening
of Chocolate, Chocolate and more Chocolate. Who needs diamonds???

13. STAMPIN’ UP HOMEMADE CARDS
Course Description: Why buy expensive store-bought cards when you can make your own with
a personal touch. Come learn to hand stamp all-occasion greeting cards. During the regular
classes we will create 10 cards each session. During the Christmas card class we will be creating
20 cards at each session. At each class learn new techniques as we focus on different designs
and styles of cards. Students must bring adhesive of their choice; double sided tape or
permanent Tombo snail type runner. Regular tape will not work. All other materials will be
provided. Please indicate on your registration form which session you will be attending.

14. AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING TRAINING
Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide youth who are planning to babysit
with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and
infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a
babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about
basic child care and basic first aid. Students will receive a Babysitter’s Training Handbook,
Emergency Reference Guide and Babysitters Training CD-Rom. Participants must be at least 11
years old.

16. BUYING A NEW DIGITAL CAMERA
Course Description: Thinking of purchasing a new digital camera? This one night crash course
will cover some features you might want to look for in that new camera. We will look at the
pros and cons of current digital camera features – for both pocket point and shoots, as well as
digital SLR’s (single lens reflex), in order for you to make an informed decision.

17. USING YOUR NEW DIGITAL CAMERA
Course Description: Got a new digital camera and not sure how to work all the bells and
whistles? This workshop will help you get acquainted with your new camera and help you
discover the excitement of digital photography. You will learn to utilize the distinctive features
of your camera as well as how to maximize your photo opportunities. This is a hands on class,
so bring your cameras! Class size is limited to insure individualized attention, so sign up early to
get a spot. This course takes place over two evenings.

18. EDITING YOUR DIGITAL PHOTOS
Course Description: The world of digital photography has opened up new and creative ways to
edit and enhance photos. We will use Photoshop software to help save images, send as
attachments or use your favorite digital photos for your web site. Learn how to correct common
photo mistakes and to bring out the best of your photo images. You will learn shortcuts the pros
use to create remarkable photographs! This class meets for two, two-hour sessions. Course
requirements include intermediate PC skills. Participants are welcome to bring their own
laptops.

Course Description: This four week course will cover a variety of dance steps including:

you and make this a fun filled night out! Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

21. GET IN STEP
Course Description: Central High School doors are open to the public to walk the halls for
health, fitness, and fun. Register to Get In Step, Monday thru Thursday, 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Entrance instructions will be provided upon registration. All walkers must be registered and will
be given I.D.s. This is a do-it-yourself program.

SPRING NURSING ASSISTANT PROGRAM
Course Description: This is a Gateway Technical College program that will be offered on
Central’s campus if there are enough interested participants. The program prepares students to
perform basic nursing skills in caring for clients in various health care settings. A certificate is
awarded upon successful completion of this course and graduates are eligible to competency
tests for placement on the Wisconsin Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Registry.
Instructor: Gateway Technical College
