FALL 2010 COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES 1. CHINA PAINTING Course Description: Learn the art of porcelain painting by an instructor who has taught across the country for thirty-five years. Each student will learn to paint a china “gift-wrapped” box with flowers and ribbons. The china is fired between each session and upon completion of painting. All china pieces, supplies and firing time are supplied by the instructor. OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING Course Description: Experience the excitement of learning to paint in your choice of oils or acrylics. Learn to compose paintings with depth by the use of warm and cool colors. Learn to use mediums to create glazes and textures. Explore mixing versatile neutral colors to create dramatic shadows. Learn brush techniques to bring your painting to life. Individualized instruction will be provided to assist students in completing successful paintings. Painting supplies are provided by students. WATERCOLOR PAINTING Course Description: Learn techniques to paint wonderful watercolors. Learn color mixing, flowing wet-in-wet colors, painting color washes and creating special effects. Learn methods to compose and design a successful painting. There will be a demonstration every class. Individualized instruction will be a part of every class. INTRODUCTORY WATERCOLOR PAINTING Composing a Picture Focusing on Values and Light Effects Course Description: Beginning watercolorists will learn a variety of watercolor techniques while emphasizing value and light effects in composition. The subject matter will be Wisconsin landscapes and flowers. A supply list will be sent upon registration. DRAWING – A Basic Course Course Description: Beginning or intermediate drawing students will learn basic concepts in line and gesture drawing. The first 3 lessons will emphasize tonal drawing with pencil. In the last two lessons, students will have the option of adding color by using soft pastels. Supplies needed include: Drawing paper or sketch pad, a 11 x 14 Pencil Drawing Sketch Pad would be ideal (Cansen or Strathmore are good brands), several #2 or #3 pencils, a pencil sharpener, a soft eraser, a set of soft pastels, and pastel drawing paper. BEGINNING MACHINE QUILTING Course Description: You’ve put a lot of time and effort into piecing that top, now learn how to do some basic quilting that will really help to show off your piecing skills and enhance the look of your quilt. This course will teach you beginning skills with a walking foot and a free motion foot. You will learn basic designs with both methods that will enable you to finish off your tops without spending money to have someone else quilt them. You must be able to lower the feed dogs on your machine or cover them for the free motion part of the class. BASIC BLOCK QUILT Course Description: Basic quilting skills will be covered in the Basic Block Quilt. This project will take the beginner quilter through the complete process of making a crib size quilt. The techniques covered will include rotary cutting, ¼” seam allowance, pressing, borders, sandwiching and pin basting, machine quilting, and binding application and hand stitching. This quilt can easily be converted to a much larger size by adding rows of blocks or by increasing the size of the blocks. Additional fabric would be needed to enlarge the quilt. GINGERBREAD OR SUGAR COOKIE HOUSE CLASS Bake, Assemble and Decorate a Gingerbread or Sugar Cookie House Course Description: Learn to bake, assemble and decorate a fun and festive Sugar Cookie or Gingerbread House like the pros. Come and create a sweet and whimsical treat for the favorite elves in your life. On the first night of class you will need to bring a batch of prepared raw cookie dough from a recipe that is supplied by the instructor, rolling pin rings, and a base and box for transport. The first evening of class you will cut out, rubber stamp, bake and assemble your creation. The second evening you will start to decorate and embellish your creation. The final night of class you will complete and take home your creation. All skill levels welcome. (Ages 14 and up – children must be accompanied by an Adult). STAMPIN’ UP HOMEMADE CARDS Course Description: Why buy expensive store-bought cards when you can make your own with a personal touch. Come learn to hand stamp all-occasion greeting cards. During the regular classes we will create 10 cards each session. During the Christmas card class we will be creating 20 cards at each session. At each class learn new techniques as we focus on different designs and styles of cards. Students must bring adhesive of their choice; double sided tape or permanent Tombo snail type runner. AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING TRAINING Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Students will receive a Babysitter’s Training Handbook, Emergency Reference Guide and Babysitters Training CD-Rom. Participants must be at least 11 years old. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of this course and graduates are eligible to competency tests for placement on the Wisconsin Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Registry.
