AGENDA 6/12/03
Exploring and Teaching Lewis and Clark Institute: Corps of Discovery
Monday, June 16-Friday, June 20, 2003
Indiana University at South Bend and the St. Joseph River
Description: To celebrate the two hundred year anniversary of the epic journey of Lewis and Clark, GENI will
offer a very special and unique opportunity for Indiana educators. The water-based group, the Buckskins, will
embark on an epic journey. For 3 days participants will paddle in canoes and camp along the banks of the St.
Joseph River. The experience is not designed as a re-enactment, but the journey will begin with blank maps and
proceed to modern-era geo-technologies: GPS and GIS. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday highlight many
dynamic field experiences that are easily replicated in the classroom, from earth science to English, to art, to
math, to geography. On Wednesday, the Buckskins will exit from the water portion of the Institute to share
experiences, strategies, and resources.
Thursday and Friday, all participants will meet at IUSB Northside 122 to continue in-class discussions and
project development. Participants will create lesson plans that draw on local resources to help interpret for their
students the impact that the Lewis and Clark Expedition had, and continues to have, on Indiana.
The book “Undaunted Courage” by Stephen E. Ambrose will be a required reading for all participants prior to
their arrival. The book provides background information that will enable the participants to gain a better
understanding of the Lewis and Clark experience and to apply that experience to their own 2003 Institute
experience.
