ACTIVITY: DEVELOPING AND PRESENTING A LESSON ON INTELLIGENCE Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences proposes that we do not have an intelligence, but instead have multiple intelligences, each relatively independent of the others. Gardner believes that all forms of intelligence have intrinsic value-it is one’s culture and context that place greater value on some capacities than on others. Several schools have attempted to incorporate these ideas into their curriculum. Our lesson will revolve around this theory. First consider which aptitude area is your strongest. When you are tackling a problem from this perspective you will find it easier and more comfortable than when dealing with the problem using the other intelligence areas. Next you will design a short lesson with other members of the class who also share a strength in this area. The lessons will be based on the following topics we will be covering in the near future: Robert Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory, pp. 435-436 - Musical Emotional Intelligence, pp. 436-437 - Interpersonal Creativity, pp. 438-439 - Spatial Is Intelligence Neurologically Measurable?, pp. 439-441 –BodilyKinesthetic E. The Origins of Intelligence Testing, pp. 442-444 -Linguistic F. Modern Tests of Mental Abilities and Standardization, pp. 444-447 – Logical Mathematical G. Extremes of Intelligence, pp. 452-454 – Intrapersonal A. B. C. D. Complete the lesson plan on the following page. Be sure to include the appropriate facts in your lesson and emphasize your intelligence in the activities you plan. When developing your objectives, remember these are for the students not you. What will they be doing or be able to do as a result of the lesson? Use verbs such as: define, explain, apply, analyze, evaluate, compare, contrast, and synthesize. For example appropriate objectives might be: The students will explain the following theories: Spearman’s theory of general intelligence and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence. The students will compare Spearman’s theory of general intelligence to Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences emphasizing the strengths of each.
