Here is my naughty list
I wanted to talk you through it building up . because looking at it complete it
seems impossible to have worked so much Out .
I became ill in summer 08 and had no idea it was mast cell/ allergies/ reactions . I
was diagnosed with gastritis after 3 weeks of retching .I was short of breath on
exertion and after showers (inhaling product fumes ) . had a day were I had a
salad –with salad cream –which I wasn’t aware of as a worry- I went very very
dizzy and nearly collapsed . I only just made it home
I had my first reaction – anaphylaxis December 5th . From this point I began kind
of watching what I was eating. Not being careful though.I convinced myself it was
a one off
After my 4th in febuaury I began really watching. I had also had many minors by
now .I wrote things down in my diary . I transcribed these .This is list one . the
timings and descriptions are as they are from my diary .
Anaphylaxis
Part 1

5th dec 2008:Eating pizza , garlic bread , drinking rose wine
Flushed bright red face , torso, pulse raced ,went dizzy , lips swelled , ears
popping , wheezy
19:00 Self presented to A&E
Resus :- angioodema , stridor, tachycardia ( heart 180 )
1ml 1/1000 epinephrine IM , piriton 10mg, Hydrocortisone 200mg IV.
Discharged 23:00.
Steroids 10mg one week
SUSPECT - SULPHITES , Alcohol ,
26th December : -ate
Felt hot flushed , itchy. Was drinking fizzy drink , containing sulphites.
27th December :- 19:30
Drinking Magners
Felt burning hot , burning. Face swelling , red , heart rate racing , chest tight
Piriton 8 mg , salb inhaler.
Epipen IM 0.3 ml ( 1/1000)
Paramedics :- O2 , became wheezy again and throat tight ,20:15 :- 0.5 (1/1000)
IM epinephrine , neb 10mg salbauamol , Hi flo o2
A&E - prednisalone 40mg po , IVI
Discharged :- 03:00
Steriods 40mg I week.
SUSPECT - SULPHITES , Alochol , Vinigar as had salad with dressing 2 hrs
earlier.
30th December Half hour after finishing big mac meal , felt hot , flushed , itchy face and body.
Voice dropped .
Piriton taken 16.20. Settled by 18:00
SUSPECT - MCDONALDS MEAL ( allegedly sulphite free )
31st Dec
22:00 felt hot , flushed , cheeks puffy. 4mg piriton taken.
22:30 :- itchy , hot , spacey , struggling to stay awake.
22:45 ;- spacey , flushed
23:00 :- settling itching stopped. No longer hot.
SUSPECT - SULPHITE - ICELAND SAUSAGE ROLL
You can see I had several reactions by now. Some to anaphylaxis and some had
symptoms but didn’t go all the way

5Th Jan
17:00 -Piriton , 17:30 hot +++, salbatamol neb as wheezy . Settled
MN :- awoke feeling very hot , took piriton, lips felt big , went back to sleep
2;30 :- awoke boiling hot , lips itchy , piriton 4 mg taken. Chest tight.
3:00 :- chest very tight , wheezy , nebuliser , salbutamol 5 mg taken.
3:30 :- lips still bit itchy mouth itchy at back and throat feels tight , mouth
breathing.
03:40 :- throat very tight , wheezy , Epipen 0.3 ml (1/1000) given with effect,
Retching.
03:50 :- ambulance crew - into a&e .
Observed - untill 7am , no complications.
NO IDEA
On reducing doses of prednisalone at GPs request.. Last dose Jan 18th.
12th feb New envirionment - no cats.
Just been to bathroom
22:00 :- itchy mouth , body, tight throat wheezy. Piriton 4mg
22:20 :- still itchy , wheeze gone , throat better.

Itchy mouth and throat , went pale , shaky .
12:15 took piriton .
12:30 wheezy and still itchy .
12:45 settled , went to sleep .

SUSPECT - MALT + snowball reaction continuing
In hospital for 3 weeks - Daily reactions at various levels . None requiring
epinephrine but inc itchy face , lips front and back of mouth , flushing of face and
torso and arms , retching, deepening voice and trouble swallowing saliva.
Episodes of wheeze controlled by salbutamol nebulisers PRN . Citrizine 10mg od
added with moderate effect.
Very reactive after CT with contrast .

From march onwards- I text myself as symptoms were happening unless I
needed to make a999 call .This helped me see patterns of symptoms
On the 15th of June I went see my first spealcist.i wanted him to look but it was
on my laptop and I couldn’t open it there because the battery had gone .
At this point I was convinced sulphites were my only trigger. This is what I mean
about not ignoring symptoms . I did not know what all the symptoms were .I also
thought some stuff was just me .
Looking back now – In red - I know what my triggers are on most of these
reactions now .

23:25 :- ears poping , spacey , throat feeling tight. Legs , body , top lip , hair
itchy.
23:30 :- chest tight , itchy mouth and front of tongue.
23:45 :- whole body itchy , face sweaty , nose blocked. A bit jittery. Chest sore in
the middle.

16:00 :- in Iceland - put arm in chiller with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Lower arm instantly red , throat and mouth itchy . Piriton taken.

16:20 :- citirizine syrup taken , whole body still itchy , chest tight but not wheezy.

22:05:- rashy for 10 mins . Itchy all over . Chest a bit tight and wheezy. Piriton 4
mg . sitting forward.
22:08 :- tongue , back of mouth itchy. Face itchy and full.
22:11:- chest tight no wheeze , still sitting forward. Body generally itchy , tired ,
shaky
22:14 :- still rashy , itchy all ove and inside mouth . Hands sweaty . A bit jittery.
22:17 :- mouth itchy inside , breathing faster again , wheeze started again
22:21 :- back and mouth itchy , feeling spacey / distant . Eyes and hair itchy.

23:30 :- itching settled , went to bed.
So – In early September I put all my reactions to date in a table . Then I began
building my naughty list . It was basic to begin and has continued to grow as new
things are noted or connections put together .
Further research in march 10 , showed me that my medications had corn flour
and geltine which had emerged form many reactions as serious triggers . So my
meds were cleared of them and it helped .

Since doing the naughty list –
I was writing my book form dec 2009 onwards and did a sweep through and did a
file named the extent of the problem .
Reading through this opened my mind to the possibility of triggers other than
sulphites.
Stress and infections came as a big surprise to me how much they impacted me
.Also hormones .Internal triggers are impossible to avoid all together . But
knowing about them can help you keep the impact as low as possible. When I
know I am being triggered I do as little as possible as resting, properly ( you type
a personality version of resting doesn’t count ) helps me tolerate the trigger alittle
better .
Infection – worst when getting ill and when recovering – I have regular infections
- up to full anaphylaxis
Hormones – mid month and when due on 34 day cycle – flush, wheeze, bone
pain up to full symptoms
Emotional stress ( extreeme )- flush , burn – up to full symptoms
Exercise – swelling moving up body , up to throat and chest
Physical stress , operations , tiredness – itching , swelling – up to full
symptoms
Sulphites – see naughty list ( acidic based pathway in lungs leads to
broncoocnstriction , up to full symptoms quickly .
Caramel colouring – E 150 a-d - up to full symptoms , quickly
Corn flour – bowel swelling , spasms and bleeds . frequency and pain – up to
full symptoms on empty stomach
Geltine – flush ++++ burning and wheeziness ++++
Alcohol in anything inc meds , gells , cleaning products , personal care
in blood / drank = quick / full symptoms .
Vinegar again in anything – bowel spasms , frequency , bowel histamine travel =
full symptoms
Heat – dizzy , flush , drowsy – up to full symptoms. Sit under fan 24/7
Low blood sugar – agaitated , shaky , flush , itch , swell – up to full symptoms
High blood sugar – flush , swell , up to full symptoms
High cholesterol – increases number and severity of attacks
Air fresheners – itching mouth face , throat – up to full symptoms
Sulphite fumes from cooking – itching mouth face throat , chest tighten / fill – up
to full symptoms
BBQ fumes – same
DIY stores – polystyrine and paint – hot , flushed , confussed , dizzy , passout
Diesel fumes in traffic – hot , flushed , nausated , vomit – up to full symptoms
Blue powder used for cleaning in hospitals – itchy mouth / face , chest
wheeziness
All spray cleaners , cream cleaners – itchy mouth throat , tounge swell ,
voice drop – full symptoms
Examples of IGE allergies
Pollen – itch , flush , hot +++ , drowsy while pollen high , chest symptoms
Cats – itch , flush , throat close . traveling cat hair makes me itch
House dust – itch flush , swell – full symptoms
Opiates bar codines – itch , vomit +++ , bowel swell
Personal care – No sodium leureth sulphate in products inc toothpaste , no
gelatine , corn flour or sulphites . – itchy , alochol / sulphites give rash then
absorbed slowly causing chest tightness , short of breath , blue , if ihaled –
wheezy

Drugs – Absolute NO’s
CT contrast – iodine
Clexane – low molecular weight heparins , Heparin of any kind
Mycin antibiotics
Ciprofloxicillin
Metroclopamide
Meptid
Plasma expanders – dextran
Beta blockers ,- calcium channel blockers are alternative of choice . Pulse
is commonly fast due to histamine
Tricyclic antidepressants – mix poorly with epipens – VT VF
SSRI’s – changing patients serotonin level leads to increased symptoms .
Some patients have high serotonin , which with ssri , will give a serotonin
syndrome
Opiates - Pethididne , Morphine , Fentnyl , buprenmorphine
50% of us –any alcohol at all inc skin wipes , products

Reactions seem to be worse with food accidents or drugs
with long half life ( CT contrast -& doses of adrenaline ) as I
get more allergen going into my system ( as it digests ) . I
will often burp , itch various places , then begin wheezing
progressing to stridor .
I have had 31 Epi - pens in 3 yrs ( over 50 doses of
adrenaline )
I know my early warning signs and will often have taken
Chlorheneramine , hydroxyzine or ceterizine syrup
Grumpiness with no cause
Coupe moment , cant find the right words , slightly
confused , can not explain something simple .
Burping , abdominal pain
Pale ( ashen ), light-headed , need to lie down .
The trigger may not be obvious for foods its normally an hr
